To all whom it may concern cross-bar 7 to which the stirrup strap (not Be it known that T, ANDREW PARKER, a shown) is adapted to be attached. This keeper includes a shank 9 which is formed at its lower end to an eye 10, and has its other or upper end inwardly bent, as indicated by the reference numeral 11, and seated within a corresponding opening in said leg. A staple 12 or any other suitable fastening means is employed for securing the shank 9 to the said leg.
The lower portion B is of U-shaped construction and the bight 13 thereof constitutes the usual foot plate. The inner and outer legs L1 and 15 respectively are disposed to register with and form continuations of the inner and outer legs 5 and 6 of the upper portion A. A hinge 16 connects the meeting ends of the inner legs 5 and 14 to permit of the lower member 13 swinging downwardly. Secured to the outer face of the inner leg 14 adjacent the upper end thereof is a pivot-pin 17, and secured to the outer face of the outer leg 15 is a similar pivot pin 18.
My invention further comprises a novel means to either lock the upper and lower portions together or disengage the latter from the former to permit of the same swinging downward.

This invention relates to safety stirrups of that type in which the foot plate is hinged at one end to the inner leg of the stirrup, and is detachably secured at its opposite end to the other leg of the stirrup.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a stirrup of the type described in which a novel means is employed for loclr ing the outer end of the plate to the outer leg of the stirrup in one position of said means, and in another position of said means to quickly disengage the free end of the pivoted foot plate from the outer leg of the stirrup, said means being actuated to re lease the said parts by pressure exerted thereupon from the foot of the rider.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stirrup for the purpose described which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, is positive in operation, and is cheap to manufacture.
'With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood. that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the. claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, the stirrup comprises an upper portion A and a lower portion 13.
The upper portion A consists of an inner le 5 and an outer leg 6, and these legs are co hnected at their upper ends by the usual This means consists of a U- shaped latch element, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 19. This element includes a U-shaped body portion consisting of a bight 20 and legs 2121. The body portion is adapted to be normally disposed in a horizontal plane, the bight 20 being disposed in advance of and in spaced relation to the stirrup, and the legs 21-21 being pivotally connected to the pivot pins 17 and '18. The leg 21 which is pivotally connected to the pin 18 terminates beyond said pin in an arcuate latch 22, which is adapted to engage within the eye 10 of the upper member A. It will be observed that by reason of this construction, the weight of the body portion of the latch element will be sufficient to cause the arcuate latch 22 to normally remain in engagement with the eye 10, and thereby lock the upper and lower members together.
In operation, the operators foot is positioned upon the foot plate 13 and below the bight 20 of the latch element 19. Should the rider be thrown, the toe of his shoe will engage the bight 20, and thereby swing the ele ment 19 upon its pivots, and as a result, disengage the latch 22 from the eye 10. As a result, the lower member B will be free to swing downwardly upon its hinge 16, and thereby release the riders foot from the stirrup.
What is claimed is:
A safety stirrup comprising in combination, upper and lower portions, the upper portion consisting of inner and outer legs and a cross-bar, the lower portion including a foot plate and inner and outer legs, a hinge connecting the meeting ends of the inner legs of said portions, pivot pins respectively secured to the legs of the lower portion, a keeper connected to the outer leg of the upper portion, and a U-shaped latch element pivoted at its ends to said pivot pins and terminating at one end beyond the pivot in an arcuate latch engageable with said keeper to lock the portions together in one position of the element, and in another position of the element to release the latch from the keeper to permit the lower portion to swing downwardly from the upper portion.
