Description

J. M. MITCHELL.
THUMB AND FINGER SUOKING PRBVBNTER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.26,1911.

JESSIE MAY MITCHELL, OF CLAYTON, MISSISSIPPI.
THUMB AND FINGER SUCKING- PREVENTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December26, 1911'. Serial No. 667,611.
Patented Dec. 31,1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jnssln MAY MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Tunica and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thumb and Finger Sucking Preventers for Children, of
which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to devices for preventing thumb and finger sucking inehildren and has for its object the provision of a device that will not harm a child while in use, and that will prevent it 'from getting the thumb or finger in its month.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a View of a childs hand showing my improved invention applied to its thumb, Fig. 2, a similar view with my invention applied to one of the fingers, and Figs. 3 and 4, detail views of the disks shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively.
In the drawings'similar rel'ercnce characters will be used to designate correspond ing parts in the several views.
1 indicates a stall for the thumb or finger that. is sucked by the child and held in place by straps 33 secured to or integral therewith that encircle the childs wrist. Secured on the outer end of the stall 1 is a disk 3 of rigid material, such as ivory, bone, metal and the like, that is large enough to prevent the child lronrgctting it into its mouth, and so constructed that it can not cut, scratch or othcrii'ise injure the child.
'lhc'disk adapltal for use on the thumb, as shown in Figs. l and 3, is preferably circular; in contour, while the disk used on the linger stall is elongated and rectangular so thdttit .will not intertere with the use of the other fingers. -As shown, the disks are secured by stitches 4 in the same manner as buttons but I do not limit myself to this construction.
As it will be apparent thata child can not get the member in its month, because of the disk 3 preventing it from doing so, the habit of thumb or finger sucking will be efi'ectually interfered with and finally broken.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is p l. A thumb and finger sucking preventer comprising means to prevent inserting the member in the mouth, and means to secure said preventing means to the member.
.2. A thumb and linger suckingprevqnter' comprising a stall adapted to be secured to the member, and means secured tothe stall to )I'CVtllt its insertion in the mouth.
8. A thumb and finger sucking preventcr comprising a stall adapted to be secured to the member, and'a disk secured to the end of the stall. 4. A thumb andfiuger sucking prcvcnter comprising a stall, means to secure said stall ,to the member, and an element 'at the outer end of said stall to prevent the insertion of said stall in the mouth.
'5. A thumb and linger sucking preventer comprising a stall, and a plate secured to the outer end o't'said stall, and ,means to secure said sucking preventer to the member.
In testimony whereof I hereto allix my signature in the presence of witnesses.
