Description
` wie' )L WILLLaMTUcKEn, of Fiskedale, in' the county of `Worcesterland State of'Massachusetts, `have invented an Improved Boiin following is a specification.
Na mul Objcctsof theliwenmi. The device f is a portable ,wooden boring-machine, such asu'sed by carpenters for mortising andislotting `tirriberpthe augerbeingrnounted in a sliding gate in an uprightfrarneandj actuated through a pair of hand-Y ,crankswu a horizontal driving-shaft geared to and traversing'vertically with the auger. 1 The inveutionconsis'ts,fiirstly, in employing Va pair of driving-gearson the crank-shaft, respectively con- "nected thcretoxn opposite movements, so as to cause a forward rotatioupf the auger to be produced by the movementzof `the cranks in eitherdirection. i i '.lhe objectof this partof `the invention is tokenable the workman 'toiusfe his' strength.economically, j byapplyingit int-l ostadvantageons manner, iand

opposite sides, and is arranged at such distance above' the upper end of the bit-shaft l as` to accommodate proper-si`zed driviiig-gears. m
For conveying the motion ofthe dri`ving-shaft H, l .I arrange thereon, facing' eachother and meshing with the bevelfgear G on the hit-shaft F, two loose gears, j
J` J', which are respectively connected tothe said shaft in different movements asuitahle clutch arr. ngement-being employed for fthis" latter purpose, which may be as follows:
Attached to the drivingshaft `A,lbetweenrthe` gears faces of the gears J J', which are provided wit-h lugs j, (one or more,) beveled in` opposite directions for` their engagemenhbeing adjusted to'secure the im ward movement of the bit, as required.
It will ber se'en that, on turning the cranks in either' direction, a forward motion will be conveyed to' the bit through one or the other of the gears; lThe cranks,I j moreover, need not be rotated, but may be oscillated w within the most effective portions of their paths, thus enabling the operator to avoid disadvantag'eous points, and in this manner to economize his strength.
To provide for backing the `bit by means` ofthe cranks, 4when desired, as `in withdrawing l, the gimletd` pointof a bit `from 'the wood, `Iprovide one of the clutch-pins L L' with a transverse 4pin-` or handle, l,
the reception of its stem. By` forcing tlie saidclutchpin back into one of thesaid, sockets the J connection is leverserhand by turning then cranks` backward, a
backward mot-ion will be imparted to the bit. No ,special means are required forretaining this -connec` tion. The binding pressure on the pin-incident to the resistance ofthe bit is sufficient.` Any suitable means may, however, be provided, if deemed preferabie. l
. For withdrawing'or elevating the' bit amovablelon-` gitudinal rack, M, is provided on the inner face of one Y ofthe uprghts of theframe being held by screws m passing through heart-shaped slots m', (two `or.rn3}e,)`
and Ytheadjoi'ning gear J of the driving-gears is constructed with a pinion,N, on its hub, adapted to `byits gravity. By shifting it so thatthe lopposite ends ot' its slots shall receive-the screws, the vsame force tends to hold it in mesh with the said pinionvN,
the engagement ot' which, in the rotation of the cranks, elevates the gate G and its.appurtenancesraising the` -bit clear of the work.
A spn'nf,Y catch, O, atlthc top ofthe frame, may enable the gate to be temporarily retained it its elevated position.
1 It will be observed that, owing tothe constant mesh* of both the driving-gears J J with the gear G on the bitlshait iu the arrangement represented, the motion of the handles is imparted to the elevating pinion N in the same manner as tothe bit.
The several features of theinveution may, of course, be used separately, and are obviously susceptible of numerous modifications in unessential particulars.
Claims.
I claim as newl. In combination, with the crank-shaft H, bit-shaft F, and bit-shaft gear G, of a portable boring-machine,
substantially as herein referred to, the two drivinggears J J adapted to operate as described, for thepur'- pose set forth.
2. The combination of the pair of driving-gears J J mounted loosely in a common shaft, H, the central fast stock K k, spring clutch-pins L L', and beveled lugs j, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth, for the purpose shown.
3. The combination, with the driving-gears J J and the clutch-pins L L of the reversing handle l" and sockets j', formed and arranged substantially as represented and described, for the purpose 'set forth.
