lOY GAR-OUSEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. August 23, 1911.
Patented Dec.17,1912.
Serial No. 645,483.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BARLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tucker, in the county of Dekalb and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Carousels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy carousels, and has for an object to provide a horizontal rotary platform on which horses or other movable figures are movably mounted and adapted to be moved on rotation of the platform.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and effective actuating means for simultaneously revolving the platform and actuating the movable figures.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side view of the toy. Fig. 2 is a vertical sect-ion therethrough. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of one of the figures and a portion of the platform.
The toy comprises a supporting frame which preferably includes a base 1, a canopyforming top 2 and the connecting standards 3. These standards connect the canopy top 2 with the base 1. A step bearing 4 extends downwardly through the center of the canopy top 2, and as illustrated, said hearing is preferably threaded, at 5, and fitted to such threaded portion are the jam nuts 6 and 7 A step bearing 8 extends up wardly from the center of the base 1 and is disposed in line with the bearing 4.
A vertical post 9 is disposed between the bearings 4 and 8 respectively, and as illustrated, said post is provided with a substantially conical upper end 10 which is fitted in the step bearing 4. The lower end of the post is also provided with a substantially conical portion 11 which is fitted in the step bearing 8. A collar 12 is revolubly supported, at 13, on the post 9, and as shown, said collar is provided with radial arms 14 whose outer extremities extend upwardly, at 15. Mounted on the extremities 15 of the arms is a horizontal platform 16. This platform is of circular configuration and it embraces the relatively large gear wheel 17 which is secured to the revolving post 9 at a point in close proximity to the portion 10 of the post.
Horses or like figures 18 are mounted on the platform 16 and supported preferably by the vertical posts 19, one of such posts being provided for each figure. A spiral spring is attached, at 20, to the post 19, and, at 21, the spring is attached to the figure at a point rearwardly of the fore legs 22. Posts 23 are also mounted on the plat form 16, and as shown, these posts are provided with shafts 24 having crank portions 25 which are pivoted between the fore legs of the figures. The posts 23 are provided with depending threaded stems 26 which extend through the platform 16 and to which the adjusting nuts 27 are operatively connected so that the posts can be adjusted vertically and securely held to the platform. Gear wheels 28 on the shafts 24 mesh with the gear wheel 17 on the post 9 so that when the latter revolves the figures will be simultaneously operated and galloping movements will be imparted thereto.
The sleeve 12 has secured thereto a horizontal gear wheel 29 which meshes with the idle gear wheel 30 on the post 31 which extends upwardly from the base 1. The revolving post 9 has fixedly secured thereto a horizontal gear wheel 32 which meshes with an idle gear wheel 33 on the post 31. The driving shaft 34 which is operatively supported on the base 1 is provided at one end with a crank handle 35, and at the opposite end said shaft has fixedly secured thereto a vertical gear wheel 36 which is adapted when rotated to actuate the gear wheels 30 and 33 respectively, so that the gear wheels 30 and 33 will be revolved in opposite directions to impart like movements to the post 9 and the platform 16.
I claim 1.. A device of the character set forth comprising a rotatably mounted platform, a rotatably mounted wheel, means for rotating the platform and wheel in opposite directions, movable figures mounted on the platform and connections between the figures and wheel so that the rotation of the wheel will move the figures with relation to the platform. I
2. A- carousel comprising an-annular member, driving means concentrically disposed with relation to the member, a yieldably supported figure mounted on the member and driven means supported by the member and operatively connected with the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
