JOSEPH E. BARRANGER, OF 'IPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAn-cLosU'RE.
Specification of ILetters Patent. Patented Dec. 10, 1912. Application l'ed June 13, 1912. Serial No. 703,452.'
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BARRANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Jar-Closure, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists ofl a ]arclosure composed of a cap, a gasket within the same,.
and an inturned member onsaid cap, the same serving to compress said gasket in such manner that it embraces the jar as to hermetically close the jar and prevent' disen` gagement of the cap with the packing un-v less properly operated by superior force.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the im portant instrument-akties thereof may be varie-d, and so it is to be understood thatrthe invention is not limited to the specific arran ement and organization shown and descri ed.
.Figure 1 represents a central vertical `secf tion of a jar closure embodying my invention in normal condition. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the closure in complete condition. Fig. 3-represents a central vertical section of the closure shown in Fig. 2; Similar numerals of reference indicate corrspondingparts-in the figures. vReferring to the drawings 1 designates the neck of a jar formed suitable material. l
2 desi ates a metallic cap which is composed o. the top 3, the shoulder 4 circumferentially around the same and the rim 5 which depends from said shoulder, said rim being deiiectedl laterally forming a rhom boidal chamberin which is fitted the gasket 6 which is of the form of a ring rhomboidal in vertical section, so as to accord with the chamber of the rim 5, it being noticed that 'the upper portion 7 of said rim is outturned in slo ing direction,- the lower portion 8 thereof) is int-urned in sloping direction so as to embrace the upper and lower sloping port-ions of the gasket thus retainingl ythe latter within the chamber of the rim and preventing dropping of the same. y
The central portion 9 of the rim or p0r-` tion intermediate ofthe portions y8, 7 is of glass or other' bent inwardly forming the inturned bead 10.- This forces in the contiguous wall of the gasket forming a circumferential groove therein, thus compressing the body'of the gasket inwardly, its height and thickness being` reduced so that while the gasket primarily loosely encircles the neck of the jar,
it is now so contracted and compressed in both horizontal and vertical direct-ions resisted by the sloping top and bottom portions ofthe rim producing wedging actions on the gasket so that the 'latter is more firmly pressed against the neck of the jar so that it tightly hugs the same, forming a hermetical joint for the jar which reliably Aand safely Aseals the same, while the'cap under ordinary circumstances retains its positlon on the neck of the jar without liability of slipping ofil of the same. A
The shoulder 4 rests on the edge of the neck of the jar limiting the descent of the cap in its application to the jar and assisting in seating the cap true in position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:"-- 1. In a jar closure, a cap having a depending siderim and a gasket within the same, said rim havingf-portions at the top and bottom thereof ladapted to embrace wedgingly the contiguous upper and lower corresponding portions of said gasket, and an inturned portion intermediate of said top and bottom members .adapted to compress inwardly said gasket between said upper and lower portions thereof.
2; A jar closure .consisting of a cap having a side rim with an outturned slope on the top thereof, and an inturned slope on the bottom thereof, a' gasket within said rim,
lsaid rim having an inwardly projecting bead adapted to compress said gasket,- inwardly against the contiguous portion of the jar, -said slopes of the rim being adapted 'to embrace the respective u per and lower f sloping portions of said gas et.
3. A Jar closure consisting of a cap havinga side rim with outturned and inturned portions respectively thereon, a gasket within said 4rlm adapted to be encircled by the same and wedgmgly' engaged by said ...fm-n
sloping portions, and an intuined member on said rim adapted to enter the outer periphery of said gasket thus compressing the lattei' in both horizontal and vertical directions While being grasped at the top, bottom and sides byvsmd riln and correspondingly forcing the inner Wall of the body of the gasket against the contiguous portion of the
