To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SLEFFEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Sulkies, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to an adjustable foot rest for use in a childs sulky, to which it is particularly adapted by reason of its simplicity, and low cost of manufacture, although it will be seen that it can be readily adapted to various other uses without radical change. To the accomplishment of these and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the childs sulky embodying the principle of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
In Fig. 1 a seat 1 is shown supported upon the axle 2, which is carried by the wheels 3, and to which is attached a handle 4:, which is also connected with the seat 1 by means of a bolt 5. A reversible back 6 is shown pivoted upon bolts 7 carried by two arms 8, which form the sides of the seat.
It is necessary in a cart or sulky of this description to have means for supporting the same when it is not being moved. It is also desirable to have a foot rest which can be adjusted to the individual user, and these two objects are provided for in my invention by means of an adjustable foot rest comprising a member 9, pivotally attached to a member 10, which is itself attached to a rod 11, mounted on the axle. In the rod 9 is a slot 12, shown in Fig. 2, which is engaged by a bolt 13 mounted in the bottom of the cart, and provided with a set screw 14: which may be used to clamp the member 9 at various points along the slot. the member 10 there is mounted a crosspiece 15 which serves as the foot rest proper.
The occupant of the sulky may face in either direction, this being permitted by the reversible seat. It is, therefore,necessaryto have an adjustable foot rest on either side of the seat. The rest opposite the one already described does not differ essentially therefrom, but is mounted on the member 16 which is here bent to slide substantially in contact with the under side of the handle 4, and is adjusted at various positions by means of the bolt 5 and the set screw 14. The cross piece 15 is attached to the member 16 in the manner already described. Pivotally attached at the outer end of the member 16 is a member 17 which projects below such point of attachment. The operation of the device will be readily apparent. In order to adjust the foot rest at various heights and distances from the seat, the set screw 14 is loosened and the member 9 or 16, as the case may be, is moved toward or away from these set screws and bolts. When the desired adjustment has been reached the set screw is tightened, and will securely grip the adjustable member, thereby providing a secure foot rest for the occupant of the sulky. The simplicity of this device is also obvious, and it will be apparent that the expense of manufacture will be extremely low, while the simplicity of the device guarantees easy and firm adjustment whenever desired.
It is obviously a matter of indifference whether the cross-piece constituting the foot rest proper is attached to the member 9 or the member 10, as almost equally good results may be obtained from either construction. In fact if it is desired to make the member 9 of heavy enough material, the member 10 may be eliminated as no support will be required in that case.

I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a two-Wheeled cart, the combination With the frame; of a member adjustably mounted on said frame and extending out- Wardly therefrom; a second member pivotally attached to said frame and connected to said first member; and a third member mounted on one of said previously-named members and adapted to serve as a foot rest for the occupant of the vehicle.
2. In a two-Wheeled cart, the combination With the frame; of a member adjustably mounted on said frame and extending out- Wardly therefrom; a second member pivotally attached to said frame and also pivotally attached to said first member; and a cross-piece mounted on one of said members and adapted to serve as-a foot rest for the occupant of the vehicle.
3. In a two-Wheeled cart, the combination with the frame and the axle; of a member slidably attached to said frame; a second member pivotally attached to said axle and pivotally connected to said firstnamed member; and a cross-piece mounted on said second member and adapted to serve as a foot-rest for the occupant of the cart.
4. In a two-Wheeled cart, the combination With the frame, the axle and a reversible seat mounted on said frame; of a handle extending at substantially right angles to said axle; a member slidably mounted on said handle and extending at a clown- Ward angle therefrom; a support for said cart pivotally attached to said handle and pivotally connected to said member; thereby supporting both said cart and said member; a cross-piece mounted on said member and adapted to serve as a foot-rest for the occupant of the cart; a second member slidably attached to said frame on the opposite side from said handle; a support pivotally attached to said axle and to said second member, thereby supporting the latter and cooperating With the same to support said cart; and a cross-piece mounted on said last-named support and adapted to serve as a foot-rest for the occupant of the vehicle, whereby a combined foot-rest and support is provided on eitherside of said reversible seat.
