TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS B. Conco- RAN, a citizen of the United States, residingin borough of Bronx, city of New York, in the county of New York .and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Vriting Machines, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to the mechanism in a front strike typewriting machine, by
which the ribbon is, vibrated toeover and uncover the printing point at every type stroke. I
In the patent to F. A. Cook, No. 926,050, dated June 22, 1909, a bichrome ribbon mechanism 'is shown in connection with a device for rendering the ribbon inoperative, so that the types may strike direct 1y on the paper, as is desirable in writing stencils. In said patent, the vibrating lever for 'the ribbon carrier is engaged by an actuator which is operated by the universal bar frame at each type stroke. This actuator is shiftable so that slots thereon may engage with one or the other of wrist pins set on said lever at variable distances from its fulcrum, and
thus impart a variable throw to the ribbon.
This device can be so set as to bring the top or the bottom of the ribbon between the type and the paper at will, and thus from a striped ribbon more than one color of writing can be written. 'Also means are provided for disengaging the lever from said actuator, to render the ribbon. inoperative even though the type is struck. This vibrating lever is fulcrumed on a bracket connected with the platen shift rail, for shifting the ribbon bodily with the platen when writing with the upper case types. Whether the ribbon is operative or is inoperative, as in writing stencils, said lever and ribbon carrier always move bodily with the platen when the latter is shifted, since the lever fulcrum is fast to the platen shift rail. The
' fulcrum is positively returned to normal position, but the 'lever returns by its own weight, so slight causes, like a bend in the carrier, or dust getting into the carrier, are liable to preven the lever from returning promptly to normal positiontherefore may swing on itspivot when being lowered, and hence possibly cause the ribbon to cover the printing point, and interfere with sten- Specification of Letters Patent.

Keys 1 of the typewriter depress levers 2 to move bell cranks 3 to raise type bars 4 causing types 5 and 6 to strike against the front of a platen 7 carried on a platen frame 8. Said platen frame is pivotally mounted at 9 on a carriage 10, which travels on rails 11 and 12 in the ordinary letter-feeding movement, operated by a universal bar 13.
The platen 7 is shiftable by means of a key 14 acting through a lever 15 and bell crank 16, the latter supporting a shift rail 17. This shift rail bears against a roll 18 mounted on the platen frame 8, and so may cause said frame to be raised at will.

On the upper end 36 of lever 22 near pins 27 and 28, is provided an armor projection 37 for cooperating with a guide, which is in the form of a panel 38. This part 38 is-opposite said arm 37 -when the actuator 29 is at its middle or'inoperative position, so'that the vibrator 23 is positively held down during the operation of cuttng a stencil, no matter what position the platen shift rail 17 may be placed in. 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a universal bar, means moving with said shiftable platen for vibrating the ribbon at the key strokes by said universal bar, means for disconnecting sald universal bar, and means for compelling said vlbrating means to preserve its 1101'- tor lever moving wit lever to engage said actuator, s ots in sai mally inoperative position when moving with said platen during the disconnection of the universal bar.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a ribbon vibrating mechanism, a universal bar for operating it, and means for disconnecting said mechanism from said bar for rendering the vibratin anechanism inoperative, of a shiftable p aten, a bar' shifting with the platen carrying a member of said. ribbon-vibrating mechanism, and means to compel said member to maintain its inoperative position when shifting with the platen.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type keys operating a universal frame, a shiftable platen, a ribbon vibrator lever moving with said platen, an actuator on the universal frame, slots in said actuator, pins on said lever to cooperate with said slots to vibrate said le': 01', a key to shift said actuator to engage with either of said pins or to be free from said pins, an arm on said lever, and a panel on said actuator to cooperate with said arm to hold said ribbon lever to keep the ribbon positively inoperative when free from said pins, openings being provided in said actuator to permit said abutment to move freely when said pins enwith said slots.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a universal bar, of a wall on said bar, a slide having spaced arms which embrace said wall, a vibrator lever adjacent said wall, pins on said vibrator, and wings on said slide arranged to be moved to selectively engage said pins by slots in said wings.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a universal bar, of a wall on said bar, a slide having spaced arms which embrace said wall, a vibrator lever adjacent said wall, pins on said vibrator, wings on said slide arranged to be moved to selectively engage said pins by slots in said wings, an abutment on said lever, and a cooperating panel on said slide arranged to lock said lever when not engaged with a pin.
