Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lor MOLEAN and THOMAS R. J URIN, citizens of the United States residin at Ortin in the count of;
Pierce and State ofWashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Dressers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw dressers and is particularly designed to operate upon the sides of any swaged toothed saw such as shingle, band, circular, etc., in such a manner that the saws will be finished and dressed without marring the saw, and at the same time round or true the saw. Heretofore in the dressing of the teeth of a circular saw, it has been customary to do so by holding an emery stone or file in a posi tion to grind the long teeth and produce a uniformity in the length thereof. This in convenience is overcome by the present invention, which provides a mechanical means whereby files or emery stones may be held to operate upon the saws aforesaid.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the present invention applied to a saw. Fig.
' 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view at one of the swiveled clamping members or blocks.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a base or support plate provided with the bolt holes 11 therein, by means of which the same is attached to a work bench, or base of a saw. The transverse ends of this plate are provided with the vertical flanges 12, said vertical flanges being pierced by the alined openings 13. Set screws 14 operable by the hand wheels 15 are threaded in the upper edges of the flanges 12 and project into the alined openings 13, the utility of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A rod 16 loosely mounted in each pair of alined openings 13 is retained in any adjusted position by the operation thereagainst of the set screws 14, which are placed by the hand wheels 15. The forward terminals of these rods are flattened to provide the hollow rectangular plates 17, the forward ends of which are pierced by the set screws 18, rotated by the hand wheels 19. The rear ends of these plat-es 17 are pierced by transverse openings 20 adjacent to the body of the rod 16, the utility of which will be here inafter more fully described.
A plate 21 is bifurcated as at 21 at its rear terminal, the sides of said plate con verge toward the rear terminal of said bifurcated plate. A bolt 22 is pivoted in the bifurcation 21 and pierces the opening formed at the rear terminal of the plate 17 said bolt being retained in any desired posi tion by the nut 23. The forward ends of the plate 21 bear against the inner terminals of the set screws 18, and it will thus be seen that these plates 21 may be placed by an adjustment of the set screws by the cooperating hand wheels 19. The forward terminals of the plate 21 are provided with channels 24, the inner adjacent surfaces of said channels providing a means whereby a portion of the file may be retained or held. A clamping bar or plate 25 is secured to the outer terminal of each plate 21 by means of the screws 26, said plate being provided with a channel 27 along its inner surface which alines and cooperates with the channel 24 of the adjacent plate 21. These channels in combination receive a section of emery stone or file 28 which is clamped in these channels by means of the screws 26.
The saw 29 operates upon the files or emery'stones 28 and as illustrated in Fig. 1, in such a manner that the teeth of said saw are thoroughly operated upon to produce a smooth and uniform surface. By an adjustment of the set screws 18 the plates may be moved to and from the saw as desired, thus increasing or decreasing the tension.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, in combination with a support, independently adjustable rods mounted in said support plates pivotally mounted on said rods at one of their ends, and means for securing grinding or finishing tools to said plates.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a plurality of rods carried by said support, plates hinged to said rods, having channels formed Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
in their forward terminals, clamping plates cooperating with said last named plates, likewise having channels formed therein, and grinding or finishing members adapted to be secured between said clamping plates and said pivoted plates.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of rods adjustably mounted therein, platesformed at the terminals of said rods, secondary plates hinged to said last named plates, clamping plates carried by said hinged plates, grinding or finishing members carried by said hinged plates and retained in position by said clamping plates.
4. In a saw dresser, a support, rods slidably mounted in said support and independently adjustable thereon, a plate pivotally mounted at one of its ends to each of said rods, a clamping bar mounted on the free terminal of each plate, the adjacent edges of said plates and clamping bars being shaped to engage a grinding or finishing tool and to be secured thereon by adjusting the clamping bar aforesaid relatively to the plate, and means engaging said bars and plates to adjust the free ends of said plates relatively to one another.
5. In a saw dresser, a support, a plurality of rods carried by said support and independently adjustable thereon, plates hinged to said rods and having channels formed in their free terminals, clamping bars adjustably mounted 011 the free terminals of said plates and also having channels formed therein, said channels being adapted to receive grinding or finishing tools and to be clamped thereon by means of said clamping bars, and the free terminals of said rods having screw rods mounted therein and 1 adapted to guide the saw.
