Description

R. S. N. BURDICK.
WOODWORKING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 5, 1911.
1,043,902, Patented Nov.12,1912.
PH co.,wAsHlNuTnN D C UNITE@ STATES PATENT @FFIQE RALPH STONS NELSON BURDICK, OF BISHOP, CALIFORNIA.
WOODWORKINGr-'IOOL Application filed September 5, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH S. N. Brunnen, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Bishop, in the county of Inyo and State ot' California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woodworkingrlools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scribing or of an improved attachment for try or other squares which will serve in connection with said square as a scribing, scratching, or marking device, and which may be also attached to any object similar in shape to the blade of a square, to provide a marking or scratching device thereon.
A. further object of my invention is the provision of an improved clip adapted to he secured in adjusted position upon the blade of a square, or similarly shaped tool which shall bear means for marking the article along which the square or tool is moved.
@ther objects and advantages of my iniproved device will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will also be understood that I may make any modiiications in the construction shown and described wit-hin the scope ot the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a try square with my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of my invention in open position. Fig.' 4 represents a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a similar view showing the use of the device with a pencil, and Fig. 6 represents a detailed view of the locking screw.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the handle of the square having the blade 2 bearing the graduations 3 designated by the customary numerals 4.
Mounted upon the blade 2 of the square is my improved device comprising the plate 5 having the central curved ear 6 formeel at one end and the plate 7 having the curved ears 8 disposed on each side of the ear 6, a pivot pin 9 passing through and pivotally connecting said ears, the downward curving of the ears causing the plates to be spaced apart to readily receive the square blade 2 therebetween.
To secure the device in position upon the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. l2, MM2.
Serial No. 647,594.
blade of the square, I form in the tree end of the plate 5 the squared opening 10 and [itting in the said opening is the head 12 ot the clamp screw 13, said screw having the enlarge squared portion 14 for fitting in the hole 10, while the end of the screw projects through the opening 15 in the end of the plate 7 and has engaged thereon the milled thumb nut 1G adapted to be turned on the screw 13 to clampingly engage the plate 7 and draw the plate 5 against the other side of the blade 2 to tightly secure the blade between said plates and prevent the slipping of the device on the square.
To facilitate the correct positioning of my device I form in the plate 7 the longitudinally extending slot 17 which has a lower enlargement 1S adapted to lie in alinement with the numerals 4, whereby as the device is moved along the blade 2, the grad uations 3 will appear in the slot 17 to indicate the distance between the central axis of the point and the entrant angle ot' the square, while the numerals denoting the various divisions such as inches or centimeters will appear in the enlargement 18 of the slot.
Formed in the plate is the socket 19 to receive tang 20 of the marking point 21, said point being in alinement with the cen ter of the slot 17, whereby as the square is moved over a piece of wood the gage point will form a scratch in the wood at the point indicated through the slot 17.
llVhile my attachment4 is particularly adapted for use upon try or other wood working squares it may also be applied to T squares and when used upon a T square I preferably remove the point 21 to prevent scratehing, the slot 17 having an enlarged upper end 22 and the plate 5 having the aperture 28 formed therein and when the device is in closed position coinciding with the enlargement 22 of the slot, said aperture and enlargement being of size and configuration to engage the point of a pencil and permit the same to mark on the surface beneath the square while preventing lateral slipping ot' the pencil point.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction of my improved device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and etlicient attachment for squares which may be readily applied to or removed from a square and which can be easily adjusted along the square to the correct point and there secured to serve as either a scratching gage or as a pencil bearing and guiding gage.
I claim:
l. An attachment for squares, comprising a pair of plates pivoted to each other at one end, means :tor clamping the free ends of the plates together, and a removable gage pointI carried by one of the plates.
2. An attachment for squares con'iprising a pair of plates pivotally connected at one end, means for clamping the other end of the plates to each other to engage the blade of a square therebetween, one of said plates having a key-hole slot formed therein to coincide with one of the graduations and indicating numerals of the square, and the device having a socket formed therein to engage a marking member. 2 3. An attachment for squares, comprising a pair of plates pivotally connected at one end, means Carried by the other ends of said plates for securing the same in an adjusted position on the blade of a square, said 2 plates having coinciding apertures formed therein to engage a marking member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of t-wo witnesses.
