CONVERTIBLE TABLE-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application iiled June 10, 1912. Serial No. 702,764.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN F. TESTER- sTnM, a resident of Nssj, Sweden, and a subject of the King of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Convertible Table-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to furniture used in and about the house and designedV to be adapted for use for a given purpose, when in one of its possible forms and for use for an additional or different purpose when in another forni. And the object of this invention is to obtain a device Which may be used as a parlor, sitting room, library or kitchen table, when in one of its forms, and which can be used as a bed or couch when converted into its other and different form.
A further object of the invention is to obtain a device, which when in form to be used as a table will not have the appearance of being designed to possess a double function or to be convertible into a bed.
A further object is to obtain a device which is of pleasing appearance, particularly When in forni to be used as a table, which is economically constructed, durable, not liable to get out of order, and not requiring any considerable skill to change it from one of its forms to the other.
in the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention in forni to constitute a table. Fig. kf2 is an end elevation of the device, (at an angle of ninety degrees from Fig. l), also in form to constitute a table. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in form to constitute a bed. Fig. t is an end elevation of the device, in form to constitute a bed. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a frame forming an element of the device.
Similar letters refer to Similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the table top. Table top A is lifted off from the remaining parts of the device vvhen said remaining parts are to be moved into position to obtain a bed.
B, B, are the side bars of the table vvhicjh is obtainable by this device, and When the several supporting parts are in position to obtain a table said table top A rests on said side bars.
B', B', are bars which are pivotally attached to side bars B in a manner hereinafter described. When the device is in position to forni or obtain a table said bars B are 1n a horizontal plane; and said bars B' are at right angles to bars B and constitute the legs of the table, and when the supporting parts of the device are in position to form or obtain a bed the said bars B are in a horizontal plane, and incombination with the bars B constitute the side Walls of the bed frame.
The bars B are built into and forni part of frames Z which are duplicates, and which respectively consist of bars B', D, D, D', D', and the tie rods d, CZ', and ci.
The frame Z is attached to bars B, B, by means of the bolts E Which extend through holes c in bars D of said frame and through corresponding holes in said bars B adjacent to the ends thereof.
F is a flexible bed support, consisting of a Woven Wire mattress which is attached at its ends to the end bars of frame Gr in the ordinary Way. As mattress F folds over on itself, when the device forms a table, the side rails of frame G are respectively made of several pieces which are joined together by hinges g (Figs. l and 3).
H is a latch to hold frames Z in the positiocili in which they are illustrated in Figs. l an 2.
To change the device from a table to a bed the table top A is removed and frames Z are turned on pivots E until the ends of bars D, D', are resting on the floor, at Which time said bars lform the legs of a bed frame, the bars B', B, B', form the side rails of said bed frame, and the bars Z) form the end rails. The frame G is then opened on its hinges g from the position in Which it is indicated by broken lines Figs. l and 2 into the position in Which it is illustrated inFigs.`
3 and 4. A mattress and bed clothing are `l provided With legs to form table legs When said frames arein one position, and with additional lage secured in planes at right angles to the planes in Which the first named legs are rin to form the legs of a bed when said frames are turned to an angle of ninety degrees from said first named position, in combination with a mattress support and a removably table top.
2. A convertible table-bed consisting of frames connected together by parallel bars pivotally attached to said frames, said frames provided with legs to form table legs When said frames are in one position and With additional legs secured in planes at.
.right angles to the planes in which the firstl named legs are in to form the legs of a bed when said frames are turned to an angle of ninety degrees from said iirst named posi` tion, in combination With removable table top and a mattress support consisting of a attached at their ends to said parallel bars,
diagonally arranged bars attached together and to the first named parallel bars, and an additional tie bar attached to said diagonal bars and to one of said iirstnamed tie bars, in combination with side rails pivotally attached to said frames, and an additional fame provided with a mattress support.
