I BROOM.
L, Specification of icttersiatent. Application filed August 1, 1,911.
Patented ,0 2 Nov. 5, 1912.
Serial No, 641,759.
Be it known that I, "WILLIAM L. HOOKS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atMars, in the county of Butler and State. of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
is invention relates to brooms, and my invention aims to provide :-first, a broom with a hollow handle that'will serve functionally as a reservoir for a liquid adapted to be fed to the bristles or splints of the broom; second, a broom head with a cavity adapted to contain an absorbent material that will hold liquid in suspension; third, a broom that can be used without raising a fourth, a broom of light and durable construction that can be manufactured at a minimum cost, and fifth, a broom having the head thereof provided with an absorbent body, and which head can be renewed without discarding the handle of the broom.
gage the stem. or shank "7 of a body 8, said stem and said body being made of an absorbent material, as felt or fiber. The body 8 conforms in shape to that of the head and surrounding said body are straws, bristles or splints 9 that inclose the body. These straws have the upper ends thereof bound, as at 10, upon the lower end of the tubular handle 1, above the portion 6. The straws 9 extend below the lower edge of the body 8. As the bridle 11 has its stitching not only also through the pad or body 8, it will be readily understood that said pad, through its connection with the handle acts to fix the broom straws and the head formed thereby to prevent suchhead moving longitudinally of the handle without the necessity for employing a separate means as in the usual construction. 7
The contents of the tubular handle or reservoir will maintain the absorbent material moist? also the straws, bristles or splints inclosing said body, and this moisture will increase the longev' y of the broom head, as the straws, bristles tained flexible and the above results by a combination of ele' ments that will be hereinafter specifically described'and then claimed. preventedfrom breaking or splints will be maininstruck, as at 5 to provide an annular inwardly pro ectingportion 6 adapted to en- Referenc -will now had to the drawwhen pressure is brought to bear upon the ing, where broom head. In keeping the straws, bristles Figure 1 1s a vertical sectional View} of a or splints damp, dust is prevented fromarisbroom cdnstructed in accordanceywithmy 111g when sweeping, and in some instances invention, Fig. v2 is agside elevation of the oil or other preparations can beiised' in lieu broom partly broken away and partly in. of water. Furthermorathe pad 8, being of is an' enlarged perspective a size to cause-its lower end to approach the body adapted to form free ends of the straws or bristles, acts as the brooni,7and;,hlig. a a support to stiffen the broom head-and render the broom more efiicient in use.
-'While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it
part of the header lower end of the handle of the broom.
The reference numeral 1- denotes a tubular handle, or rod whichcan be made, of metal awa other light and durable mate- ,ments thereof are susceptible to such rial. The-upper end of the handle 1 has-the size, shape and inner walls thereof screw threaded, asat 2 as fallwithin the to receive'an exteriorly screw threaded plug Iclaim.
In lieuof this What I claim is changes To 1 serves functionally as a reservoir for water or other tending into the lower endof-t-he' handlega'nd liquid, and the lower end of saidhandle is securedthereby, said "neck 1s to be understood that-the structural elemanner of assemblage scope of the appended;
