Specication'of-Letters Patent. I Patented NV.V5, 1912. Y
Application` filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,29L`
' thereon, forming a part of this specification.
panying drawings, in which- In the use of bags, pocket books, and the like, much difficulty has been encountered in overcoming -the objection raised by those who use such articles, to the spreadmg of the bag frame members when the contents of such bag or pocket book are such as to so distend the-sides as to make the closingo the bag or pocket book diflicult. TheV principal objection arises from the fact that as ordinarily constructed, but a single catch or lock is provided in the center of the bag frame members for holding the same together, leaving the ends of the frame to be sprung apart by overcrowding the interior of the bag, with resulting annoyance and loss. In order to eliminate these evils and overcome these objections, I have devised 'a new fastener which holds the bag frame members together and which is further provided with an auxiliary catch securedto the said fastener for additionally holdingvthe members together and'independently operated from the fastener.
In carrying out my invention, I make use the structure illustrated in the accom- Figure l represents a perspective view of a bag frame having applied thereto my improved bag fastener. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged side elevation of my improved fastener; and Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary enlarged transverse section taken on lines :1c-:v of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
A bag frame fastener made in accordance with my invention may be applied to any ordinary or desired form of frame. That shown in the drawings, consists of two hinged members a and b of substantially the v'trated `in E ig. 2 of the drawings,
-V shapeshown in Fig. l. Near the middle )ortion'of the frame member a, I secure the residing 1n Y astener or catch c, substantially as illusor in any other` convenient or desired manner.
y The fastener@2 `preferably consists of an open-ended casing provided with two downwardly extending sides dfand e, designed to embrace andhold the frame members a and b together. Extending-rearwardly from the side d of the fastener-"is an extension f, by meansof which the said fastener is pivotally `secured tothe frame member a 1n any convenient or desired manner. VQneof the sides of the fastener 0 prefer ably the Aone marked e is provided with an opening g to receive the headed stud z, which may be securedto the frame member b in any well-known manner.
The fastener just described serves to hold the frame members together. In order to provide a second catch or latch for additiona'lly holding the frame members together, which catch or latch is operated independently of the fastener c, I provide a catch z', pivotally secured to the fastener c, as by means of a pivot j, said catch z' being so formed as to provide an opening Ic to rev ceive the stud 7L and to have locking engagement therewith. The lower end of said catch is' provided withv a nger piece or knob Z.
The invention is not limited to -the exact embodiments shown, but may be modified in various ways in the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. Incombination, two members movable relatively to each other, a fastener secured to one of said members embracing and` holding said framev members together, and a locking device secured to said fastener having locking engagement with one of said frame members for additionally holding said fastener and members together and independently operated from the fastener.
2. In combination, tw'o members movable relatively to each other, a fastener secured to one of said members for holding said frame members together, a stud secured to the other member and a catch for additionally holding said frame members together pivotally secured to the said fastener and adapted to engage with said stud and independently operated from the fastener.-
3. In a purse or bag fastener, the combinationwith a pair of hinged frame members, of a fastener pivotally secured to one of said frame members embracing and holding said members together, and a catch for additionally holding said members together pivotally mounted upon said fastener and operated independently from said fastener.
4. In a purse or bag fastener, the combination of apair of hinged frame members,
of a fastener pivotally secured to one of said frame members adapted to embrace and hold said members together, a stud secured to the other frame member ana `a locking devlce pivotally secured to said fastener and having locking engagement with said stud for additionally holding said frame members and independently operated from said fastener.
This specification signed and witnessed 20 FREDK. C. FISCHER, W. I-I. CONKLIN.
