DEVICE FOR SHARPENING KNIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Application filed January 25, 1912. Serial No. 673,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO C. J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of \Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of knife sharpeners.
An object of my invention is to provide a knife sharpener which can be operated by a person inexperienced in the art.
Another object isv to provide a knife sharpener which is so constructed as to assure its, durability and capability.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sharpening device of the above character wherein the sharpening members can be easily removed when occasion requires.
A still further object is to provide a sharpening device which is inexpensive to manufacture, whereby itv may be sold at a very low cost.
With the above and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts .as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention showing a part of the same removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detail.
In the accompanying drawlngs which fully illustrate the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates the body portion thereof which is formed in sections, the sections being provided with the cut-out portions 2, the same terminating into the flared openings 3 as clearly shown. The rear side of each of the sections 1 is cut away as shown at 4 for a purpose that will presently appear. The sections are further provided with the recesses 5 whereby they may be readily'held in the hand of the operator.
Interposed between the sections 1 is a member 6 which is-provided with a recess 7 similar to the ones which are formed in the sections 1. It. is further provided with an opening 8. The sections 1 are secured to each side of the members 6 by such means as shown at 9 and have pivotally connected thereto a plurality of members 10 which opcrate in the opening 8. The members 10 have each of their sides bent downwardly as shownat 11 and are provided with the extensions 12 which are pivoted upon the pins-13. The ends of'the members 10 are bent downwardly and inwardly as at 14,
, whereby they are'made capable of receiving blocks of abrasive material, such as carborundum', they being shown at 15.
For the purpose of normally holding the blocks 15 in engagement with each other I provide the leaf springs 16 which are secured to the member 6 as shown at18 and engage the members 10 near their lower ends. It is now readily obvious that when the blocks 15 become worn, broken or displaced one of the sections 1 may be removed from the member 6 and the block easily removed and a new one inserted in its place. It will be also readily recognized that the operation of the herein set forth device is of such obvious nature that the same can be operated by a person or persons inexperienced in this art.
From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be fully appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a body portion formed in sections, a member mounted between said sections, said member being provided with a cut-out portion, blocks of abrasive material pivotally connected-to said sections and operating in said cutout portions,-and a cut out portion provided on each of said sections registering with the cut out portion of the member for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the character described,
a body portion formed in sections,-a member being provided with a cutout portion secured between said members, pins journaled through said, sections on opposite sides of the cut out portion, a member pivoted upon each of said pins and abrasive blocks carried by each of said second mentioned members for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character-described, a bodyportion formed in sections, each of said sections being provided with an opening, a member provided with an opening secured between said sections, said openings adapted to register and provide a hand opening, said member provided with a cutout portion, pins connected to the body extending across said cut-out portion, a separate block of abrasive material pivotally connected upon each pin and a cut out portion provided on each section registering with the cut out portion of the member for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the character described, a body portion formed in sections, each of said sections provided with an opening, a
member secured between said sections, said member also provided with an opening, said second mentioned openmg adapted to register with said first mentioned openings, said member provided with a cutout portion adapted to register with said apertures, and blocks of abrasive material pivoted to said sections and operating on'said cutout portion for the purpose described.
5. In a device of the character described, a body portion formed in sections, said sections provided with openings, a member secured between said sections, said member being also provided with an opening adapted to register, with said first mentioned openings, said member provided with a cutout portion, blocks of abrasive material pivoted to said sections one on opposite sides of the cut out portion and operating in said outout portions, one block inclined with respect to'the other andleaf springs between said member and blocks in said cutout portion to engage said abrasive blocks for the.pur-
pose described.
