ARCHIBALD STIIIES, OF OBAR, NEW MEXICO.
:S300M-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anci-usano Srrnns, a citizen of the United States residing at Obar, in the county of Quay, State of ew Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders; and I do hereby declare the `following to be a vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved removable broom holder and attaching means therefor and the primary object of the invention is to construct a holder which may be economically manufactured and which will serve for use on broom heads so that the head of the broom may be renewed and attached to the holder in the place ot' a Worn out head. y
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of clamping means carrid by the handle and adapted for securely connecting a broom head thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as wil1 be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings -Figure 1 is a side elevation of a broom head and handle secured. by my improved means. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the broom with two of the side section. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of one of the clamping members adapted to engage one side of t-he broom.v
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a broom head 10 of ordinary construction and which is preferably constructed of broom corn which is securely connected transversely of the broom head as shown at 1l by sewing or otherwise and in order to removably attach the head to a handle so that the head of the broom may be renewed, I provide a handle l2 preferdle is exteriorly, threaded above thc conical point 13 as shown at 111-, said threads` being Specification of Letters Patent'.
Application led November 27, 1911. Serial No. 662,655.
adapted to be engaged by an interiorly Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
threaded sleeve 15 forming a clamping member and which has a cup-shaped enlargement 16 at its lower end for moving a pair of side clamping 'plates 17 into binding engagement with the broom head 10 for securely connecting the handle thereto.v Each of the plates 17 of which two are provided is formed with an opening 18, said plates being of triangular form in general outline and provided with a series of inwardly projecting teeth 19 adapted to extend into the broom head and each of said plates is further formed with a reduced neck portion 20 which are pivotally connected around the lower `end of the handle 12 directly above the pointed conical portion 13 as shown at 21, the conical portion permitting the handle to penetrate the broom head. A clamping bolt 22 disposed through the broom head' plates and tightly draw the same together' and prevent displacement thereof while the sleeve also serves as a reinforcement for the lower end oit the handle.
)over plates 23 are disposed over the plates 17 and are preferably provided with surrounding scalloped edges 24 as shown to form a further gripping-surface, the neck portions oit the cover plates being hinged to the neck portions 20 otthe plates 17 as shown at 2G and adapted to be engaged by the enlarged portion 16 of the sleeve 15 simultaneously with the engagement thereof with the neck portions 20 so as to tightly clamp the broom head in osition. v
Angular cup-shaped ec ge plates 27 are provided with neck portions'28 which are hinged or pivotally connected to a handle as shown at 2l) and each of said edge plates has a pair o1 hooks 30 pivoted intermediate the side edges thereof. The hooked extremities 31 o1 the hook 30 are projected into the broom head or splints thereof and the side clamping plates 17 engage thereover to more secure] y hold said plates 27 in position. lt will also be observed that the hooks 31 are extended inwardly at a common direc tion or plane thereby exerting opposite pull vwhich. comprises a few simple to insure retention or the broom head in proper shape without depriving the same of its flexibility.
., Fromftheforeging 'description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided an improved form of broom holder and attaching means parts and which permits the detachment of the broom head whenlthe same is worn out so that the head `may be renewed without renewing the handle, at a cheaper' cost. It is also apparent inasmuch as the broom head is not constructed with a stem and wire winding for `securing .the head to the handle that the weight lof the'broom is not' materially inl ed. Aportion an creased. Y K
Iclaim y 1.l rilhe combination with a handle and a broom head at one end thereof; of attaching` meanStherefor7 said handle having a threadythelrebeneatln a sleeve threaded on the handle and having an enlarged lower end, broom d, a conical tapered portion engaging plates hinged to the handle above the tapered portion and having inwardly 4projecting teeth to engage the sides of the "broom, a clamping Abolt for drawing said plates together, cover plates for the rst named plates and hinged thereto, edge plates for the broom and hooks carried by the edge plates and adapted to be projected into the side portions ofa broom head beneathv the aforesaid plates.
