vice that presents a neat appearance JAMES W. RILEY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filedrebi'uary 2 i Specification-ofLetters-Eaten: Patentedoct', 1 1E312.
7,1912. Seria1No.680,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. RILEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
his invention relates to window locks, and the primary object of my invention" is to furnish the upper sash of a window frame with a simple and inexpensive lock that can be easily and quickly shifted to lock one sash relatively to the other, whereby neither sash can be shifted.
A further object of this invention is to provide a lock consisting of comparatively few parts, easily assembled to provide a dein connection with a window frame.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the window lock. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached bolt, and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the lock casing.
A lock in accordance with this invention comprises an angle plate 1 having the upper and lower edges thereof provided with lateral flanges 2 and 3, said flanges being arranged in parallelism and projecting at substantially right angles from the plate 1.
Mounted against the flanges 2 and 3 is an angle cover plate 1 having the edges thereof provided with flanges 5 and 5*, said cover plate forming a casing inclosing the plate 1. The cover plate a and the angle plate 1 are retained in position upon the side rails 6 of a window sash 7 by screws 8 or other fastenthe cover plate into the rail 6.
The angle cover plate 4 has a slot 10 at the angle of said cover plate, said slot being in communication with compartments 11 and 12 of the lock casing. Movably mounted in the lock casing is a flat bolt 13 that extends V shifted succe plate,
Vided with studs through the slot 10, said bolt having the inner end' thereof provided with studs or lugs l latthe upper and lower edges of 'said bolt, said studs preventing the bolt frombecoming accidentally displaced relatively to the lock casing. It is necessary that the bolt be placed in position prior to securing the angle cover plate 1 to the rail 6, and after this has been accomplished the inner end of a bolt 13 can be shifted into either of the compartments 11 .or 12, as best shown in Fig. 2. With the inner end of the bolt in the compartment 12, the lower sash 15 of the window frame 16 can be raised or low ered, but with the inner end of the bolt in the compartment 11, the outer end of the bolt extends ,over the meeting rail of the lower sash 15 and prevents said sash from being lowered.
The lock casing can be positioned at any desired point upon the side rail 6 of the upper sash whereby the upper sash can be opened a prescribed distance and supported in an open position by the bolt 13 resting upon the meeting rail of the lower sash.
The lock in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal, and as it consists of few parts, the lock can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
What I claim is:
1. A window lock casing providing two compartments, said angle casing having, a slot formed v in the angle thereof in communication with the cpgmpartments of said casing, and a bolt mova ly adapted to have the inner end thereof 'ssive-ly into the compartments of said casing.
2. A window lock comprising an angle an angle cover plate mounted over said angle plate and providing two com partments, said angle cover plate having a slot formed therein in communicatlon with mounted in the slot of said casing and/ comprising an angle the compartments of said lock, and a bolt movably mounted in the slot of said cover plate and having the inner end thereof profor retaining the end of said bolt within said cover plate.
3. In a window lock, the combination with the sashes of a window, of an angle casing capable of being shifted to engage the meeting rail of the loWer sash of said Window,
and means carried by said bolt for retaining the inner end thereof 1n said casing. 10
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
