Abstract

A smoking article comprises a wrapped tobacco rod and a filter containing a filter material and an outer plug wrap. The wrapped tobacco rod and filter are connected by a tipping paper which is wrapped around a portion of the filter and the wrapped tobacco rod. The invention relates to a smoking article, such as a filter cigarette.

It is often known that smoking causes odors on the fingers. During the smoldering phase of the cigarette, sidestream smoke is emitted from the burning end. Depending on the angle at which the cigarette is held, a portion of the sidestream smoke flows in parallel with the cigarette and becomes in contact with the smoker's finger. The odor component of the sidestream smoke deposits on the skin, causing a persistent and unpleasant finger odor. The use of coke materials (activated carbon) in cigarette paper and filters is a widely applied technique to reduce the level of volatile smoke constituents.

WO 2008/043988 A1 discloses a carbonaceous paper as a filter plug wrap. The core of the associated filter also contains carbon. A filter according to this document will be attached to a cigarette rod using a conventional edging paper such that the carbon paper is not directly exposed to the outer surface of the cigarette.

EP 2 719 295 A1 describes a smoking article having a filter wrap, the filter wrap comprising an adsorbent material on its inner surface to reduce the mainstream gas phase composition. It is characterized by having a venting zone upstream of at least 80% of the adsorbent material to maximize the desired effect of reducing smoke constituents.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a smoking article which reduces the odor of a finger which is generally caused by smoking.

This is achieved by a smoking article having the characteristics of claim 1. The advantageous version of the invention will be followed by an attached item.

A smoking article (e.g., a cigarette) according to the present invention comprises a wrapped tobacco rod and a filter. The filter system includes a filter material and an outer plug wrap. The wrapped tobacco rod and filter are connected by a edging paper which is wrapped around a portion of the filter and the wrapped tobacco rod. The outer embolic wrap is opaque and contains activated carbon (active coke). The edging paper is provided with at least one opening (hereinafter referred to as "opening", but it does not exclude only one opening) through which the carbon surface of the outer plug wrap is exposed, i.e., exposed to the outside of the smoking article.

The filter may be constructed of a segment comprising a filter material (e.g., cellulose acetate) and surrounded by an outer plug wrap. The tobacco rod of the smoking article can be wrapped around a suitable cigarette paper as is well known in the art. The wrapped tobacco rods and filters are coaxially aligned and joined with edging paper. Therefore, the edging paper has always been the outermost layer of the filter area of the smoking article.

In an advantageous embodiment, the outer plug wrap is comprised of a single interlayer containing activated carbon. The term "single interlayer" does not exclude an optional additional coating, but rather has only one paper interlayer. Activated carbon can be added, for example, during the paper making process. Suitable paper lines are disclosed in WO 2008/043988 A1 (supra) and are commercially available from Saber Swiss Quality Paper. Often referred to as "carbon papers." The edgings labeled "edging paper" can be made of any suitable material known to those skilled in the art, such as paper, cellophane, polymeric films, and the like. Preferentially, each opening has a surface area in the range from 0.5 mm ² to 20 mm ² . The combined surface area of all of the openings of a cigarette can be in the range from 20 mm ² to 200 mm ² . Preferably, these openings are located in the area of the filter normally held by the cigarette, which is 10 mm or more away from the mouth side end of the cigarette. In filter vented cigarettes, the opening should be placed upstream of the venting zone. The opening can be cut from the edging paper by well-known procedures such as laser cutting or mechanical punching.

In the smoking article according to the present invention, the activated carbon is exposed through the opening to the outer surface of the filter end of the smoking article, wherein the smoking article is typically held such that the activated carbon is placed in close proximity to the smoker's finger during use of the smoking article . The activated carbon system interacts with sidestream smoke passing along the surface of the cigarette and can adsorb odorous sidestream smoke components. Another way of interacting is by direct contact between the activated carbon and the finger, whereby the odorous volatile material that has been deposited on the skin is thus adsorbed by the activated carbon.

In order to avoid additional filter venting caused by the opening, the filter may comprise at least one layer of wrap (including a carbon-containing outer plug wrap) having a porosity of less than 10 CU in the region of the opening. This means that one of the filter plug wraps located below the opening is substantially non-porous, that is, it has a porosity of less than 10 CU. CU: Coresta Unit. 1 CU = 1 cm ³ / (cm ² .min. kPa). To achieve the desired level of filter ventilation, the edging paper may be additionally micro-perforated by electroporation or laser perforation, for example, before or after it is wrapped around the smoking article. Preferably, this additional venting zone is located downstream of the opening in the edging paper. Thus, the venting zone can be disposed in an area extending from the mouth side end of the smoking article to one of 70% of the length of the outer plug wrap. The length of the outer plug wrap preferably corresponds to the length of the filter.

Preferably, the opening is located at a distance of at least 10 mm from the mouth side end of the smoking article. This generally avoids the user's lips coming into contact with the activated carbon exposed through the opening, but at a good distance to achieve a reduction in finger odor.

In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the activated carbon content of the outer plug wrap is in the range of from 5% to 50% by weight, that is, the total weight of the embolic wrap including the activated carbon. Or preferably in the range from 10% to 30% by weight.

As already mentioned, the activated carbon system can be applied to the outwardly directed surface of the outer embolic wrapper, i.e., directed outwardly relative to the finished smoking article and exposed through the opening in the edging paper.
