Abstract
A two stroke engine with direct fuel injection is disclosed. Liquid fuel atomised in a carburetor is supplied to an aukiliary chamber where the fuel particles are substantially evaporated before being injection into the combustion chamber. Preferably the auxiliary chamber is formed by an auxiliary piston located within the main pistion and so the evaporating fuel cools the main pistion. The injected fuel is positioned within pure air transferred from the crankcase to create a stratified charge. This charging and the small fuel particle size due to evaporation lead to low emissions.
