Abstract

A quartz glass forming apparatus is characterized in having a mold with a hollow part capable of housing the quartz glass and made of a material having larger expansion coefficient than that of the quartz glass, a pressing part arranged movably inside the hollow part and a heating mechanism for heating up the quartz glass housed inside of the hollow part, and a molding mechanism capable of tightly pressing the pressing part along the pressing direction, thereby molding the quartz glass into a desired shape by pressing by a pressing part while heating the quartz glass in the hollow part by the heating mechanism. The mold has a plurality of side plates assembled to be in contact with each other to form the hollow part and engaging mechanisms engaged with the outside of a plurality of the side plates and an engaged surface of a plurality of the side plates with the engaging mechanisms is formed to be tapered to keep the engaged state in the molding and release the engaged state in the cooling after the molding though the use of outward force onto the side plates exerted by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between the mold and the quartz glass.
