Abstract
A polarizer integrated with a phase shifter, of good uniformity and double-axis orientation, is provided with the optical characteristics for setting the double-axis orientation within a wide range and the method thereof. The polarizer can be assembled with liquid crystal cells to form a liquid crystal display device. First, a coating layer 4 of anisotropic refraction index is formed on a mold-release film 6. After a process of laminating the coating layer 4 onto a polarization film 1 or a transparent resin film 3 oriented inwards and a process of laminating the polarization film 1 as well as the transparent resin film 3 or the coating layer 4, the polarizer integrated with a phase shifter is made. The transparent resin film 3 and the coating layer 4 forms the phase shifter whose the inward surface retardance (R0) is equal to or larger than 20nm, and the retardance (R') in the thickness direction is greater than 40nm. The polarizer integrated the phase shifter can be assembled with the liquid crystal cells to form a LCD device.
