Abstract

The invention concerns the use, as foam-inhibiting additives in low-foam cleaning agents, of alkyl polyethyleneglycol ethers, without terminal OH groups, of the formula R?1-O-(CH2?CH2?O)n?-R?2 in which R?1 is a straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkenyl group with 6-18 C-atoms, R?2 is an alkyl group with 4-8 C-atoms and n is a number between 3 and 6, prepared from ethylene oxide and a fatty alcohol, or mixture of fatty alcohols, containing an R?1 group and subsequent etherification with an alkyl halide containing an R?2 group, by ethoxylation of the fatty alcohol in the presence of calcined hydrotalcites as catalyst.
