Description

METHOD OF SHUNTING ALUMINUM AND MAGNETIC TO Committee on Inventions and Discoveries at the Council of Ministers of the USSR

Published in the Bulletin of Inventions and Trademarks No. 9, 1963.

It is known shunting in electrolysis workshops equipped with aluminum busbars by closing the cathode and anode bus-bar packages with a stationary or portable shunt, which is a small segment of the same bus-bar package. Shunt lay between the opposite packages.

To simplify the operation of shunting and saving metal, in the described method it is proposed to immerse the ends of the current-carrying thickness bags in a vessel filled with a low-melting alloy. For carrying out the process, an alloy containing 20.5% bismuth, 20.5% lead, 33.3% tin and 25.7% cadmium is proposed. The liquid state of the alloy is maintained by the Joule heat when an electric current passes through it. The shunt is removed by tapping the molten alloy through a tap in the bottom of the vessel.
