Abstract

A handle structure for a carton having a handle panel and a strap member integrally conjoined with the handle panel and having opposing strap edges substantially disjoined from the handle panel, said strap member including a substantially centrally disposed region wherein opposing central strap edge segments of said opposing strap edges are substantially parallel characterised in that there further comprises a severance line segment disposed proximate each of the corners of the handle panel extending from a first end point proximate an associated one of said corners to a second end point proximate said centrally disposed region of said strap member such that when a force that is substantially normal to a plane in which said handle panels lies is exerted upon said centrally disposed region, said strap member is flexed substantially outwardly of said plane from a biased position proximate said plane. <IMAGE>

Description

Technical field

The present invention relates to cardboard carriers, and in particular to cardboard carriers with a reinforced handle which increases the strength and appearance of the carrier.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Handles of cardboard carriers serve for carrying them. A frequent drawback of flexible carrier cardboard carriers with a handle inserted into one of the carrier panels is that the most stressed part of the carrier is the handles or those parts of the panel into which the handle is inserted. It would be desirable to develop such a handle or a cardboard carrier of flexible material where neither the handle nor the portions of the panel into which the handle is inserted would not be subjected to excessive strain.

In order to increase the interest of customers, it is very often desirable that cardboard carriers be as aesthetically pleasing as possible. It would therefore also be desirable to develop a type of cardboard carrier with a handle that forms an aesthetically harmonious whole with the carrier.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

A carton carrier handle according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention is formed in a panel delimited by opposite side and opposite end edges which intersect each other to form a handle panel. A handle band is attached to the handle panel and is disposed between the end edges. Opposite edges of the handle band are separated from the handle panel. The handle band includes a central portion, wherein the edge portions of the center of the handle band are substantially parallel and connect opposing side edges. Near each corner of the handle panel is a separation line element that extends from the first end point near one of the corners to the second end point near the center of the handle band, so that when using a tensile force substantially perpendicular to the plane of the handle panel to the center a portion of the handle band has arched the handle band from its original folded position from the outside of the panel plane.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Corresponding or identical features of the invention are denoted by the same reference numerals throughout the drawings. For practical reasons, the drawings 1, 2 and 3 are described simultaneously.

1 and 2, a carton carrier 10 with a handle according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown. In Fig. 3 there is a cross-section 12 from which the carrier in Figs. 1 and 2 is assembled.

FIG. 2 shows the transverse mounting of the cans C with respect to the handle of the carrier 10 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Also shown in FIG. 2 is the manner in which the upper wall of the carrier 10, together with the handle, moves upward when a force F is exerted to lift the strap of the handle 14.

The handle of the present invention is a carrier 10 in the form of a closed unit composed of interconnected panels. Main neighboring panelv20. 22, 24, 26 and 28, which form a box when the end panels 20 and 28 are joined, are best illustrated in Figure 3. The end panels 20 and 28 of the blank 12 form the top wall or top panel of the handle 10. For better clarity, portions of the upper panel 20, 28 are described in detail. Both halves of the panel include a handle band 46 and 44 with a tapered portion 30 and 38 f

in the middle. The remainder of the top panel 40, 42 lies along the side edge of the top panel.

Adjacent to the end edges of the upper panel are overlays 80. Each overlap forms at least a portion of the end wall of the assembled carrier.

In the assembled carrier, the handle bands 46 and 44 overlap to some extent, the tapered portions 30 and 38 overlap fully to form a substantially reinforced handle. Strips of fabric are led obliquely from the highest point of the side edge and the end edge of the panel at the end portions of the handle strip 46, 44.

The strip of fabric 54 is delimited by a separate pair of perforated line 57 that extends obliquely from said highest point of the apertured line 56 that extends between the perforated line 57 and the edge of the panel 20, 28. The intersection of the perforated line 56 and the perforated line 57 increases the efficiency of the invention.

The connecting element 70 is connected by the handle strips 46 and 44 and the upper panel portions 42 and 40 adjacent the handle strips 46 and 44. The tensile force exerted on the end region of the handle is evenly distributed towards the ends of the handle and carrier by coincidence of the edge 72 (cross-section in cross section 12) 46 and 44 with an edge openwork 56 of the fabric strip. The functionality of the handle is further enhanced by ending the edge 72 in the connecting tab 70. The end portions of the top panel that coincide with the end portions of the handle may optionally include a central fabric panel SO. This is delimited by a curved or arcuate openwork line 58 which, for example, 12 coincides with the perforated lines 57 of the strips of the fabric of the handle. Another pair of center fabric panels 60 may also be formed on the opposite side of the carrier.

The handlebands 44 and 46 form a handle that distributes the tensile force towards both ends of the carrier. The features of the handle described above cause the handle belt 30 and 38 and other portions of the upper panel to fold out or arch outward in a predetermined manner outward when the carrier is lifted by the force F. When the carrier is lifted, the strips of fabric 54 cause a gradual stepped bulge of the panel 20, 28 inwards (see drawing 2). The tapered portions 30 and 38 form a practical and reliable handle. The connecting tabs 70 connect the handle band 46, 44 to adjacent portions of the upper panel 42, 40. By this connection, the upper panel 20, 28 is held in a more complete form when the carrier is lifted. The side panels42.40 of the top panel tend to deviate from the handle belt. The tie tabs prevent this deflection and give the upper panel of the carrier a more aesthetic appearance and greater strength.

After transversely placing the cans C or other objects (i.e., transversely with respect to the longitudinal dimension of the carrier and the top panel - see drawing 2), the center fabric panels 50, 60 allow for a greater tension in the corners of the carrier.

The handle structure of the present invention is reinforced and distributes tensile stress from the handle itself to the ends of the carrier. At the same time, it gives the carrier an aesthetically pleasing appearance and, after lifting, provides greater strength.

Figures 4 and 5 show a cardboard carrier with an alternative preferred embodiment of the handle of the present invention. The features of Figures 4 and 5, which are consistent with the features of the embodiments of the invention in Figures 1 to 3, are designated with the same reference numerals but increased by 100. In an alternative embodiment of Figures 4 and 5, a first corner fabric 200 is formed in each corner of the top wall. The handle is defined in the top wall by a perforated line 190 and a first corner openwork line 191 that converge from the corner of the top wall or panel toward the end. The cross-sections 172 defining the edges of the ends of the handle strip may extend in different directions, but in the alternative embodiment shown, they are preferably positioned substantially parallel to the longitudinal dimension of the handle strip and the side edges of the top wall.

The fabric tabs 170 are delimited by the openings of the tabs 194 and 195. Although the openings of the tabs may be assembled to each other in a variety of ways, in the alternative embodiment shown, their position is not parallel. One of the open lines of tab 195 faces the hand opening. The arrangement of the parts of an alternative preferred embodiment of the handle in FIG. 5 causes the upper wall to bend in a predetermined manner as well as pressure distribution in a predetermined manner when the carrier is lifted. Each cross-section 172, 196 that separates the remainder of the top panel handle and the tabs 170 (see mainly drawing 4) is interrupted by a notch that joins the parts. If a force j is applied to the handle belt; these notches cause the handle band 144 and tabs 170 to separate from and from the upper panel in a predetermined manner, the handle band pivoting outwardly of the fabric portions 200, 202 and 204 angularly apart. The first fabric portion 200 is ideally deflected below the outwardly inclined handle band. When lifting the carrier by the handle, the weight of the carrier causes a deformation which results in a joint between the oblique cross-sections and the first open lines and the deflection of the first fabric portion 200 over the edge of the side wall of the carrier. This arrangement of the parts results in a stress distribution in the corners of the carrier. In addition, the canisters C (or other objects) provided by the killers serve as supports or reinforcements after the carrier has been closed.

In practice, when lifting the handle band, the notch assembly of the handle band 44 and tab 170 in the space upstream of the notch assembly connecting the handle band will approach tabs 170 to the remainder of the top panel.

The main handle elements of the present invention are deflected from the handle panel 44/46 and 144/146 by the handle bars 30/38 and 130/138 and the cross-section portions 72 and 172. Each cross-section portion is located between a point near the corner of the handle panel and a point near the center parts of the belt handle. This arrangement results in such a resilient tension between the handle band and the handle panel that when the tensile force F is applied to the central portion of the handle band in a direction substantially rectangular to the plane in which the handle panel is located, the handle band is deflected out of position. original (see drawings 2 and 5). The described arrangement of the handle elements directly requires the use of a tab-like fabric 70 and 170 that connect the end portions of the handle strip to the rest of the handle panel. The tensile stress caused by the weight of the carrier (force F to lift and hold the carrier in free space) extends from the ends of the handle belt to the corners, end panels, and side panel portions, instead of concentrating the tension in the unwanted parts of the handle panel and the center where tearing and damage can easily occur. Just a considerable degree of separation of the central portion of the handle strip from the plane of the handle panel helps to distribute the tensile stress as described above.

The separation line elements may be arranged in several optimal ways, e.g. with respect to the side edges of the handle panel, the separation line elements are disposed in parallel, and as they approach the end edges of the handle panel, the separation line elements deviate from the side panels. In the case of a carrier containing cylindrical objects (such as cans C) by the tangent T (or in its vicinity) which coincides with the line of contact of the top last can in the carrier battery.

The brittle notches 74, 76, and 174, 176 are optimally positioned across the fabric including the tabs 70 and 170 and the handle band and through the separation line elements 72 and 172. The keys 54 and 200 described above also fulfill the same function. They are located between the end point that is closest to the corner of the carrier and the corner itself. Cardboard carrier with a handle in the form of a belt with a hole for the hand, the handle is flexibly mounted along two opposing edges to two other carton panels, characterized in that the handle belt extends longitudinally along the handle panel between the two opposite end panels of the carrier and each corner of the carrier and the nearest end of the grip belt is a collapsible wedge that is made and adapted to change its shape when the grip belt is lifted by the handle panel plane, the outer cans disposed adjacent two opposite end panels and the handle panel function as reinforcement elements between two additional panels and allow a substantial tensile stress distribution to be applied to these other panels in the outer can area, and there is a fabric portion between the two ends of the handle band and the corner wedges including a strap connecting the handle in the form of the band to the handle panel close a hand hole opening that allows the handle strip to be separated from the handle plane and determines the amount of load on the cans with the reinforcement feature. 66. The carton of claim 65, wherein each corner wedge comprises a perforated line and a non-perforated line that are not identical. 67.
