Abstract

The method concerns development of compressive residual stresses in corrosion resistant steels and superalloys on nickel basis. It consists of producing a bath of molten metal, cooling the bath to build a metallurgical bond with adjoining solid metal, and quenching the bonded metal to the temperature of the surroundings below the melting zone of the metal through contact with a quenching medium. Also claimed are a method for repair of damage caused stress corrosion cracks, and a corresponding apparatus.
