Abstract

An absorbent article such as an absorbent garment or the like, contg. an absorbent unit comprising the following layers: (A) a layer (10) of a hydrophilic absorbent material; (B) a layer (15) adjacent to (A) of wadding material layer in the form of a mesh with distinct holes (16); and (C) a porous material layer (20) which is contact with parts (13) of (A) via the holes in (B) and with parts (17) of (B) and forms the inner surface of the unit which comes into contact with the skin of the wearer. The prepn. of the articles is also claimed, in which a layer (B) is cut in a first direction at a number of locations (18) and then stretched in a direction (F-F) transverse to the first direction to form a mesh with distinct holes and then (B) is secured to layer (A), with a layer (C) being secured to one side of (B) so that parts (21) of (C) come into contact with parts of (A) through the mesh holes.
