Abstract

An orthosis for treating extremity fractures in the vicinity of joints includes an elongate substantially stiff support element (1) and means (7, 8, 9) for fastening the element to the extremity. In accordance with the invention the support element (1) has first and second support portions respectively arranged at either end thereof for engagement against one side of the extremity with the first support portion substantially in connection with the joint. The fastening means (7, 8, 9) provide a third support portion (16) for engagement against the opposing side of the extremity between said first and second support portions. The fastening means (7, 8, 9) are substantially unyielding, at least in the transverse direction of the support element (1). A repositioned fracture can thus be fixed by applying pressure distally and proximally about the fracture in combination with bolster action therebetween.
