Abstract

A hydrogen concentration cell includes a first and a second electrode, and it has an electrolyte which selectively lets through hydrogen ions in between. The second electrode is exposed to a reference composition having a fixed hydrogen partial pressure, which is a function only of temperature, while the first electrode is exposed to a water source which has an unknown hydrogen concentration. The electrodes are permeable to hydrogen and the hydrogen concentration gradient induces a voltage between the electrodes. The voltage is proportional to the hydrogen concentration in the water source, which is a convenient means for measuring the hydrogen activity/concentration at operational temperatures and pressures of a light water reactor. <IMAGE>
