Abstract

Low carbon scrap steel is melted in a direct current arc furnace (or added as a melt to a furnace). Carbon or carbon-contg. material is added to the melt via a hollow electrode. - The electrode (1) has a channel (2). The scrap steel (6) is melted in the bowl (3). There is a start-electrode (4) and a bottom electrode (5). Carbon is added at (8) through the channel (2).
