Abstract

Sepn. of hydrophobic substances from hydrophilic substances comprises: (a) forming an aq. dispersion of the mixt., of pref. concn. 10-20 wt.%; (b) adding a bridging hydrocarbon of b.pt. below 70 deg.C (pref. one or more C4-C6 paraffins) to form agglomerates of the hydrophobic material selectively; and (c) sepg. the agglomerates from the aq. dispersion. The bridging hydrocarbon may then be sepd. from the hydrophobic material and recycled. Used esp. for sepg. coal (hydrophobic) from ash constituents and pyritic sulphur, and phosphate rock (hydrophobic) from gangue minerals. Process energy consumption is low. The agglomerant is easily removed from the final prod.
