Abstract
The invention relates to a metal filler wire for gas-metal plasma arc welding having a sheath and a powder core, and also to a method of pretreating such a wire. According to the invention, in order to be very suitable, such a wire has a relatively thin sheath and a powder core of low compactness and specified particle size. The surface of the wire is free of substances having a lower melting point than that of the wire itself, and the powder core is composed of pure metals or alloys which are free of mineral additives or gas-emitting substances. The pretreatment of the wire comprises heating under a protective gas in such a way that oil and grease residues and other impurities on the surface of the sheath evaporate, the heating being continued until the evaporated products are carried away by the protective gas. The wire is then allowed to cool in the protective gas atmosphere.
