Abstract
A cover for an electric arc furnace has an annular outer portion and a circular inner portion each of which is composed of a number of segments (2, 3) which are electrically insulated from one another by asbestos fibre strip (18). The segments (2, 3) of each portion are water cooled (14, 15, 16) and are suspended from a carrying construction (1, 4, 6, 7, 8) which bears against a wall of the furnace. Each adjacent pair of anchor-shaped segments (2) of the inner portion enclose between them an opening of circular cross-section lined with a refractory material (17) through which an electrode can pass. A radially extending dividing wall 13 in each anchor shaped segment (2) extends between two electrodes to the centre of the cover. Baffles (16) ensure that cooling water is directed in towards the dividing wall. The surface of the segments (2, 3) facing the furnace interior is provided with a layer of electrical insulating material which can be a 0.5 to 3 mm thick layer of oxide ceramic material. <IMAGE>
