Abstract

The invention relates to a process for growing, harvesting and packaging plants that are cut off above ground level, such as lettuce and cabbage heads and the like. The invention also relates to a device for putting this process into practice. In the process according to the invention, a number of elongated open boxes are used, which have a bottom with a number of through holes spaced out at equal intervals. Each box is put out in the field, with its bottom lying on the ground, and seeds are sown or plants are planted in the soil, or in the direction of the soil, through each hole. The plants are watered in the box until the crop is ready for harvesting. A horizontally oriented powered cutting tool is then inserted under the bottom of each box, which cuts off the roots of the plants under the bottom of the box, after which the boxes are used as packaging units for the plants in them. <IMAGE>
