Abstract
1,160,500. Endarterectomy needle. S. SOBEL and M. J. KAPLITT. 18 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 18428/68. Heading A5R. A gas endarterectomy needle 20, e.g. of stainless steel, comprises a shank 22 having an internal longitudinal bore 38, fixed at one end 28 to a hub 30 for coupling to a source of CO 2 and at the other end 34 fixed to a spatula 32 having at least one passageway 40a leading from the bore 38 to an opening 42a at the peripheral edge of the spatula. As shown, the shank 22 comprises a first cannula 26 surrounded by and disposed within a second supporting cannula 24. The spatula 32 is a substantially flat circular disk coplanar with the shank and has passageways 40, 40a and 40b in communication with the bore 38 of the internal cannula 26. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the shank comprises a single cannula 48 and the spatula 50 includes a central bore 52 of substantially the same diameter as the bore 54 of the cannula 48 and which leads to the passageways 56. In a further modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the spatula 64 is saddle-shaped (Fig. 9, not shown) and is provided with a manifold bore 74 leading to a plurality of passageways 78. All the edges of the spatula are blunt and arcuate.
