Abstract

There is disclosed a method for coating a non-absorbent substrate of melamine formaldehyde resin, poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(1-methylethylene), poly(1-chloroethylene), or polyethylene. There is applied a layer of an aqueous liquid in the form of a solution of an emulsion of a compound with the ability to form a chemical bond to the substrate upon irradiation with actinic radiation. Next the substrate is irradiated to initiate a reaction to form a covalent bond, while the substrate still is wet. Next remaining aqueous liquid is removed and a subsequent coat is applied and cured.
