Abstract

The invention relates to a system (1) for handling elongated pieces (2), such as lumber pieces, with mixed dimensions. The system (1) comprises an infeed conveyor (3) comprising at least two horizontal transport chains (7) arranged parallel, a single piece feeder (4) arranged in connection with the infeed conveyor (3), to which the infeed conveyor (3) supplies the elongated pieces (2), an outfeed conveyor (5) arranged in connection with the single piece feeder (4), and a control unit. The invention also relates to a method for handling elongated pieces (2), such as lumber pieces, with mixed dimensions.

Claims (13)

Claims
1. A system (1) for handling elongated pieces (2), such as lumber pieces, with mixed dimensions, the system (1) comprising: an infeed conveyor (3) comprising at least two horizontal transport chains (7) arranged parallel, each horizontal transport chain (7) comprising a plurality of endless conveyors (8) arranged in series, wherein the infeed conveyor (3) is adapted to create a space between each one ofthe elongated pieces (2) in a transport direction (T), a single piece feeder (4) arranged in connection with the infeed conveyor (3), to which the infeed conveyor (3) supplies the spaced apart elongated pieces (2), wherein the single piece feeder (4) comprises at least two horizontal transport chains (9), arranged in parallel, each one of which being equipped with at least one adjustment element (10) arranged to push the elongated pieces (2) from behind, an outfeed conveyor (5) arranged in connection with the single piece feeder (4), wherein the outfeed conveyor (5) comprises at least two horizontal transport chains (11), arranged in parallel, each one of which being equipped with a plurality of carriers (12) arranged at even intervals to push the elongated pieces (2) from behind, and a control unit which is adapted to detect a position and size of each elongated piece (2) on the infeed conveyor (3) and to control the single piece feeder (4) such that the at least one adjustment element (10) on each one of the at least two horizontal transport chains positions (9) in the space between two elongated pieces (2).

The system (1) according to claim 1, wherein the at least one adjustment element (10) of the single piece feeder (4), based on the position and size detected by the control unit, is adapted to arrange the elongated pieces (2) along a straight line which is perpendicular to the transport direction (T) and at a predetermined distance from each other.

The system (1) according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the at least one adjustment element (10) of the single piece feeder (4), based on the position andsize detected by the control unit, is adapted to adjust the elongated pieces (2) in relation to the carriers (12) of the subsequent outfeed conveyor (5).
4. The system (1) according to any one ofthe preceding claims, wherein the at least one adjustment element (10) comprises a movable portion (14) being movable from a retracted position into the space created between two elongated pieces (2).
5. The system (1) according to any one ofthe preceding claims, wherein the single piece feeder (4) comprises two adjustment elements (10) evenly distributed at a transport surface (13) ofthe single piece feeder (4).
6. The system (1) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the infeed conveyor (3) is adapted to create the space between each one of the elongated pieces (2) in the transport direction by altering velocities of the endless conveyors (8) ofthe infeed conveyor (3).
7. The system (1) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the |nfeed conveyor (3) comprises four horizontal transport chains (7) arranged parallel, each horizontal transport chain (7) comprising four endless conveyors (8) arranged in series.
8. The system (1) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising one or several cameras (6) or sensor elements connected to the control unit and adapted to detect the position and size of each elongated piece (2) on the infeed conveyor (3).

A method for handling elongated pieces (2), such as lumber pieces, with mixed dimensions in a system (1), the system (1) comprising: an infeed conveyor (3) comprising at least two horizontal transport chains (7) arranged parallel, each horizontal transport chain (7) comprising a plurality of endless conveyors (8) arranged in series,a single piece feeder (4) arranged in connection with the infeed conveyor (3), to which the infeed conveyor (3) supplies the elongated pieces (2), wherein the single piece feeder (4) comprises at least two horizontal transport chains (9), arranged in parallel, each one of which being equipped with at least one adjustment element (10) arranged to push the elongated pieces (2) from behind, an outfeed conveyor (5) arranged in connection with the single piece feeder (4), wherein the outfeed conveyor (5) comprises at least two horizontal transport chains (11), arranged in parallel, each one ofwhich being equipped with a plurality of carriers (12) arranged at even intervals to push the elongated pieces (2) from behind, and a control unit, wherein the method comprises: transporting the elongated pieces (2) along the infeed conveyor (3), creating a space between each one ofthe elongated pieces (2) in a transport direction (T) by means ofthe infeed conveyor (3), detecting a position and size of each spaced apart elongated piece (2) on the infeed conveyor (3) by means ofthe control unit, and controlling the single piece feeder (4) such that the at least one adjustment element (10) on each one ofthe at least two horizontal transport chains (9) positions in the space between two elongated pieces (2).
10. The method according to claim 9, further comprising, based on the position and size detected by the control unit, arranging the elongated pieces (2) along a straight line which is perpendicular to the transport direction (T) and at a predetermined distance from each other.
11. The method according to claim 9 or 10, further comprising, based on the position and size detected by the control unit, adjusting the elongated pieces (2) in relation to the carriers (12) of the subsequent outfeed conveyor (5).

The method according to any one of the claims 9 to 11, wherein the step of controlling the single piece feeder (4) such that the at least one adjustmentelement (10) on each one ofthe at least two horizontal transport chains (9) positions in the space between two elongated pieces (2) comprises: projecting a movable portion (14) of the at least one adjustment element (10) from a retracted position, above a transport surface (13) of the infeed conveyor (3) and into the space between two elongated pieces (2).
13. The method according to any one of the claims 9 to 12, wherein the step of creating a space between each one ofthe elongated pieces (2) in a transport direction (T) by means ofthe infeed conveyor (3) comprises: altering velocities of the endless conveyors (8) of the infeed conveyor (3).
