Description

VISOR Technical fieldThe present invention concerns an attachment arrangement fora helmet and a attachment of a visor to a helmet, a visor, helmet with a visor.
BackgroundMany helmets are provided with a visor, especially helmets for mountain bikes, such as enduro, racing and downhill, and enduro, motocross and speedway motorcycles. These visors protrude forward from the helmets. One situation which couldcause a problem is if a person using such a helmet with visoris riding' a bike or motorcycle and. falls over the handle bars, the protruding' visor may cause dangerous rotationalforce to the neck of the person since the visor will be thefirst to take the impact of the ground, for example.
Another situation may arise when a person riding the bike or motorcycle in the woods, for example, and need to duck for a branch or the like, the branch easily may get caught by the visor. Also this may jerk the neck, make the person lose sight and perhaps fall.
Summary of the invention Previously' helmet makers have provided visors fixedly at- tached. to the helmets, which. visors break when. hit by animpact force. But since the visors are provided close to theface of a wearer it is dangerous since sharp pieces of the broken visor may cut or penetrate the face.
There is also a helmet with a complicated release mechanism for releasing the visor if impacted. 150036SE The present invention is an elegant and effective solutionconcerning an attachment arrangement between a helmet and avisor, which would release when an impact is applied to thevisor from ahead or from underneath. On the other hand if animpact is applied from above the visor will stay in positionwithout risking to delimit the sight of a wearer of the hel- met.
According to a first aspect of the present invention an at-tachment arrangement for attachment of a visor to a helmet isprovided. The helmet has two lateral sides and a top side. The visor has at least two side attachment portions, one foreach lateral side of the helmet, and at least one attachmentportion between the two side attachment portions arranged toattach to the top side of the helmet. The side attachmentportions of the visor are rotationally attached at the lat-eral sides of the helmet. The at least one attachment portionthere between has an opening or slot towards a front of thehelmet so that a fastening' means at the helmet may slidethrough the opening or along the slot if the visor is exposedto an impact from ahead or from underneath while the visor travels over the helmet backwards.
According to an embodiment the attachment portion is closedtowards a back of the helmet. In this way a hit from abovewill not cause the visor to release since the visor is notpermitted to travel downwards or forwards due to the closed attachment portion.
According to another embodiment a protrusion is provided atthe helmet having a slope upwards backwards. In this way athreshold is built in for the release as the force requiredat the visor upwards and/or backwards must be large enough to start a sliding out of the attachment arrangement, i.e. the 150036SE visor travels up over the helmet backwards so that the fas- tening' means slides out of the attachment portion. of the visor. Preferably, an angle between a plane along the visor and the slope is less than 80°, preferably less than 60°.
According to a further embodiment the side attachment portionis provided with a slot within which a side fastening means, provided at the helmet, may slide during an impact to thevisor. Thus it will be possible for the visor to travel fur-ther over the helmet in case the helmet is wider, has a larg- er circumference, than at the position of the fastening means, since the fastening means may slide in the slots. Italso makes it possible to better receive oblique impacts.the slot is in. one end. so that the side Preferably, open attachment portion may detach from the helmet in case theside fastening means slides all the way through the slot and out.
According to an embodiment slot is arranged in an angle sothat the side fastening means cannot slide in the slot if thevisor receives an impact having at least a force componentfrom above. This is to avoid the visor turning down over the face of the user delimiting the sight.
According to another embodiment the slot is arranged in anangle so that the side fastening means can slide in the slotif the visor receives an impact having at least a force com-ponent from below forcing the visor to travel over the helmetbackwards. Thus when the visor has travelled. up over thehelmet the slot comes in a suitable direction for the fas-tening means to slide in the slots in order to further travel or detach from the helmet. 150036SE According' to a further' embodiment the fastening' means areprovided. with. a central pin having' a length. axis arrangedradially out of the helmet and a stopping means stopping theattachment portion from detaching radially out of the helmet. It is not required to have a stopping means, although it is preferred.
According to another embodiment the side fastening means areprovided. with. a central pin having' a length. axis arrangedradially out of the helmet and a stopping means stopping theside attachment portion from detaching radially out of thehelmet. one embodiment friction. between the According to stopping means, the attachment portions and the helmet restrain thevisor from detaching from the helmet under normal usage. Forexample, the visor should not travel up over the helmet be- cause of hard Winds.
According to a second aspect of the present invention a visorfor attachment to a helmet is provided using the attachmentarrangement according to the invention. Preferably, the visoris made of a tenacious material having a rigidity for with-standing forces, especially from above, but still having a certain flexibility.
According to a third aspect of the present invention a helmetis provided suitable for having a visor attached using the attachment arrangement according the invention.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention a hel- met with a visor attached by means of the attachment arrange- ment according to the invention is provided. 150036SE Short description of drawings Embodiments of the invention will now be described in moredetail under referral to appended drawings, in which:Fig. l shows a helmet with a visor attached by means of anembodiment of the attachment arrangements.

Detailed description of embodiments of the invention In the following' examples of embodiments of the different aspects of the invention will be described in detail. In Fig.l a helmet 2 with a visor l is shown. The two are adjoined byThe helmet 2 has two all means of an attachment arrangement. lateral sides 3, a top side 4, a front 8 and a back lO, in respect to how a user would use the helmet 2.
The visor l has at least two side attachment portions 5 (in the embodiment shown, two) and at least one attachment por-tion 6 provided between the two side attachment portions 5, in the shown embodiment one central attachment portion. The 150036SE side attachment portions 5 are arranged. to attach at the lateral sides 3 of the helmet 2, one on each side.
The side attachment portion 5 are rotationally attachedaround a side fastening means 14 having at least a pin 15with a length axis 16 arranged radially outwards of the lat-eral helmet side 3, see Fig. 5.The central attachment portion 6 is arranged to attach at thetop side 4 of the helmet 2. A fastening means 9 comprising atleast a pin 15 is provided on the helmet 2, the pin 15 beingarranged protruding outwards of the top side 4, see Fig. 3 and 5.
Having at least three attachment points to the helmet 2 arigid visor 1 may be achieved even if the nmterial of thevisor may be slightly tenacious in order not to break at animpact.
In Fig. 2 an embodiment of a visor 1 is shown. At the topattachment portion 5 an opening or slot 7 is provided in the direction towards the front 8. If the visor 1 is exposed to an impact from ahead or from underneath, also oblique fromthe sides, the visor 1 will be pushed backwards and up overthe top side 4 of the helmet 2, rotating' around. the side fastening means 14. Meanwhile, the top fastening means 9 will slide out of the opening or slot 7, thus not stopping the movement of the visor 1.
The slot 7 may have a restriction 18 so that the pin 15 ofthe fastening means 9 need to overcome by breaking or snap-ping over. In case it is desired to attach the visor 1 inmore than one position the slot 7 may comprise more than oneone for each position, restriction 18, see Fig. 7. 150036SE It is not desired that the visor 1 may fall or be pusheddownwards so that the sight of the wearer will be delimited. Thus the top attachment portion 6 is closed 19 in a directionbackwards. If an impact is received from above onto the visor1 the fastening means 9 will be stopped from sliding in theslot 7 by the closed material 19 of the attachment portion 6.In Fig. 3 an embodiment of a helmet 2 is shown. In this em-bodiment a protrusion 11 is provided at the top side 4. Theprotrusion 11 has a slope 12 upwards in the direction towardsthe back 10. An angle d between a plane along the visor 1 andthe slope 12 is less than 80°, preferably less than 60°.
Depending on the chosen angle different resistance to slidingwill be incurred. The smaller angle d, the less resistance tosliding of the visor backwards up over the helmet and thus of the fastening means 9 sliding in the opening or slot 7.
Also the side attachment portion 5 may be provided with aslot 13 in which the side fastening means 14 may slide duringan impact to the visor 1, see Fig. 2. Thus it will be possi-ble for the visor 1 to travel further over the helmet 2 inthan at case the helmet is wider, has a larger circumference, the position of the fastening means 14, since the fastening means 14 may slide in the slots 13.
Preferably the slot 13 is open in the outer end of the sideattachment portion 5. Thus the visor 1 may fully detach fromthe helmet if needed. The side fastening means 14 would thenslide all the way through the slot 13 and out.
In Fig. 4 it is shown how the visor 1 has travelled backwardsup over the top side 4 of the helmet 2 due to an impact to the visor 1. The fastening means 14 has slid along the slot 150036SE 13. In this position it is easy for the visor 1 to furtherdetach from the helmet since the direction of the slot 13 issuitable for further detaching, if the slot 13 is open ended. In Fig. 1 the open end of the slot 13 is shown and the direc-tion of the slot is towards the front and preferably slightlyupwards. Thus the visor 1 is “locked” in the use positionsince the opening 7 at the top attachment point is open to-wards the front 8 and the side attachment point is open moreor less to the back 10. It is also possible to bias the visor1 between these three points.
In Fig. 6 a fastening means 9 or 14 is shown having a stop-ping means 17 for stopping the attachment portion 5 or 6 ofthe visor 1 from detaching outwards of the helmet surface. For example the fastening means 9, 14 may be a screw. It is also possible to provide a friction force between the stopping means 17, attachment portion 5, 6 and helmet 2. Thismay be arranged by means of surface design or clamping forceof the fastening means, for example.
The present invention also has the advantage of having apossibility to easily detach the visor 1 from the helmet 2,especially if the side slots 13 are open ended, for storingor travelling with the helmet with visor.
It is also possible to arrange the attachment arrangementvice versa having the fastening means provided at the visor and the slots or openings in the helmet. 150036SE
