Abstract

The pulp is passed through a high-pressure delignification reactor run (R1-R3) and then depressurized and heated with steam before being supplied to a reactor system (R4) in a low-pressure run where the dwell time is greater than that in the high-pressure run. - A continuous process for the alkaline oxygen gas delignification of cellulose pulp which has been cooked and optionally washed (W1) after cooking and which is stored in a substantially atmospheric storage tower (ST) or pulp tank, comprises the use of a reactor system with multiple oxygen gas reactors. The pulp being delignified has a consistency of 8-18 % and a kappa value of at least 15 (more than 20). During delignification, alkali (NaOHMAIN) is added to the pulp to provide a starting pH of more than 9 and 5-50 kg oxygen per tonne pulp is added at a point before the first oxygen gas reactor in the system. The total dwell time for the pulp in the system is more than 45 minutes. The pulp is pressurized to a starting pressure of more than 15 bar during the initial addition of chemicals and initial mixing in required for delignification, then the pulp is supplied to multiple mixing locations (M1-M3), the pressure in the final location being at least 13 bar. The dwell time in this first high-pressure run is at least 3-10 minutes. The pulp is then depressurized to less than 10-12 bar, heated with steam in order to increase its temperature by at least 5 deg. C and then supplied to a reactor system in a low-pressure run where the dwell time is greater than that in the high-pressure run.
