Изобретение относится к производству строительных материалов, преимущественно вспученного вермикулита, из необогащенной руды с содержанием пустой породы от 15 до 85%. Целью изобретения является повышение удельной производительности процесса, качества и выхода вспученного материала, а также сокращение энергозатрат. Сущность предлагаемого изобретения заключается в подсушке и нагреве сырья до температуры 80 - 120°С перед подачей в основной обжиговый канал печи в дополнительном сушильно-подогревательном канале отходящими газами, забираемыми после основного обжигового канала печи, а нагрев сырья в каналах осуществляют сначала прямоточно во взвешенном распыленном состоянии, а затем противоточно в виде естественно скатывающегося по наклонной плоскости насыпного слоя.
