Abstract

The presence of microplastics in the natural environment is considered as a global threat to marine biodiversity. At present, there is a need for innovative solutions to address this issue and provide additional baseline data to researchers. An innovative device was fabricated to preliminarily assess microplastic sizes on-site setting. The present invention used a camera and a portable microscope programmed to detect and approximate size of a photographed microparticles. The invention could lessen hassle and cost of having it tested in laboratories and other practical methods that require sample to be delivered to the testing centers. In this work, a conversion factor of 1 mm: 680 pixels was utilized from diffraction grating calibration experiment. The invention was able to detect microplastics ranging from 29.4 – 30.3 µm. Data clearly revealed that the invention could successfully estimate the sizes of microscopic debris.
