THE DEVICE INCLUDES: A) A MEANS TO MEASURE A DELAY BETWEEN THE SIGNALS OF THE NEAREST END AND THE ARRIVAL OF THE CORRESPONDING ECHOES IN SUCH SIGNALS; B) A MEANS TO RECEIVE A COPY OF SUCH SIGNALS AND TO PROCESS SUCH COPY IN ORDER TO CREATE A STARTING SIGNAL THAT CHANGES OVER TIME AS A PATTERN, REPRESENTING THE ATTENUATED ENERGY CONTENT OF THE DELAYED AND ATTENUATED SIGNALS; AND C) A NON-LINEAR PROCESSOR ADAPTED TO PASS THE SIGNALS OF THE DISTANT END SUBSTANTIALLY WITHOUT DUTYING IF THEY OVERCOME THE PATTERN AND TO DUTY THE SIGNALS IF THEY ARE FOUND WITHIN A DEFINED INTERVAL BELOW THE PATTERN
