The initial gas mixture 8 to be degummed is a non-condensable gas containing hydrogen sulfide. The gas-liquid contact column 2 comprises first and second sections (3,4) containing a bed of filler material, which may be structured or irregular fillers. The bed is supported by a conduit device 18 which promotes its wetting in the bottom, but minimizes the pressure drop in the gas through the column. The initial gas mixture is dried and then introduced (14) into the first section of the column. A new stoichiometric amount of ammonia solution 9 required to react with the hydrogen sulfide present in the initial gas mixture is also introduced into the first section of the column. Finally, the first section of the column receives the second ammonia solution through the second section and into the first section. In the first section of the column, the initial gas mixture, the fresh ammonia solution and the first sector of the column pass through the second section and contact the second ammonia solution entering the first section to release the gas stream, Go into two sections. The discharged gas stream contains all the ammonia and hydrogen sulphide that did not react in the first section. They exist by stoichiometric amount. In the second section, the released gas stream is contacted with water to capture unreacted ammonia and hydrogen sulphide to form a second ammonia solution. The second ammonia solution conveys captured stoichiometric ammonia and hydrogen sulphide to the first section. The desulfurized gas is recovered from the second section of the column.
