Abstract
PURPOSE: To separate metal with good electrolytic efficiency by providing specific cooling passages to an electrolytic chamber in a method of producing metal of specific weight lighter than that of electrolyte by electrolyzing molten salt.
CONSTITUTION: Cooling passages 3 communicated with an electrolytic chamber 2 by openings 5, 6, and made coolable with cold fluid flowed in pipes 15 are provided to the chamber 2 disposed with an anode plate 7, a cathode plate 8 and multiple intermediate electrodes 12. In the case of extracting metallic Mg from molten metal salt contg. for example, MgCl2, the raw material melt introduced through a supply pipe 16 is electrolyzed in the chamber 2. The heated melt is overflowed from the upper part of the chamber 2 into the passages 3 to cool this, after which it is circulated again to the chamber 2. The produced gaseous HCl is discharged from a discharge port 14, and sludge is discharged through a discharge pipe 18. The formed metallic Mg is collected in an Mg well connected to the upper part of the passages 3 and is drawn thereform.
