Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the content of S, O2, H2, N2, etc. in molten steel by a method wherein molten steel is charged in the furnace of a converter, and, while heated with arc using electrodes, slag former and Ar gas is injected for agitation, then the furnace is tilted, and slag former is blown through the tuyere with Ar gas.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel M is charged in the furnace 1 having a molten metal outlet 10, a porous plug 3 at the side of the furnace bottom, a tuyere 4 at the side wall of the furnace, a work hole 2 and an additive inlet hole 2a at the top, while Ar gas is being blown into from the porous plug 3. Basic slag former is charged from the inlet hole 2a, hollow graphite electrode 8 is inserted through the work hole 2, and while arc is used to heat molten steel M, Ar gas is injected through the porous plug 3 and through the hollow hole 8a of the electrode 8 to agitate molten metal M. Then, the electrode 8 is removed, the furnace is tilted, slag former and component adjusting alloy are charged from the inlet hole 2a, and Ar gas is blown, together with slag former, through the tuyere 4. Bubbles of Ar and slag former, while agitating molten steel M, removes, S, O2, H2, N2, etc., thereby to effect smelting.
