Description

本発明は、脊髄損傷を修復するための装置および方法、詳細には、損傷した脊髄神経組織の再生および修復を刺激するための装置および方法に関する。
脊髄損傷は、一般に、機械的な力により、脊髄の軸索または神経繊維が中断されるときに生じる。脊髄が、圧縮、分離または打撲されると、軸索は、物理的または生理学的に崩壊し得、その結果、神経電気インパルスの伝達が、影響された軸索の長さに沿って起こることができない。最終的に、それらの関連細胞体を含む軸索の大集団は、死滅し得、脳と末梢神経との間の連絡における大量損失を引き起こし、そして種々の程度の対麻痺または四肢麻痺を生じる。

Claims (5)
- 損傷した脊髄神経組織の再生および修復を刺激するための装置であって、
脊髄軸索損傷の部位に近接する椎骨内に配置され、そして該脊髄軸索損傷の部位にDC電流を送達するよう構成された複数の電極を備え、該複数の電極の各々が、該DC電流が通って送達される集合導電性電極表面を含み、ここで、該集合導電性電極表面が、該電極表面からの電流密度が脊髄軸索損傷の部位を取り囲む組織を損傷することなく、軸索再生および修復を誘導するように十分大きく、
そしてここで、該集合導電性電極表面が複数の導電性準表面から構成され、隣接する該導電性準表面が、該DC電流の送達から該脊髄軸索損傷の部位に生成される毒性産物の産生を最小にし、そして毒性産物をなくすに十分な非導電性隔壁により互いから分離されている、装置。 - 前記DC電流が、損傷した脊髄神経組織の前方向再生および修復を誘導し、そして有意な枝枯れを防ぐに十分な持続時間の間、前記脊髄軸索損傷の部位に送達されることを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記電極が、前記脊髄損傷の部位に近接して、該脊髄の断面積を囲むように配列される、請求項2に記載の装置。
- 前記電極が、前記脊髄損傷の部位を囲むように構成および配置された三次元形状で配列される、請求項2の記載の装置。
- 前記電流密度が、電極−組織界面で75μA/cm2より小さい、請求項2に記載の装置。
