従来の自動二輪車のエアクリーナとして、例えば特公昭62−11179号公報に開示されているものがあった。これは、ケース本体の側部開口をケースキャップにて覆蓋してなるエアクリーナケースと、このエアクリーナケース内に収容されるフィルターエレメントを備え、前記エアクリーナケース内に導びかれた空気を前記フィルターエレメントの前記ケースキャップ側から前記フィルターエレメントを透過させることにより清浄して前記エアクリーナケース外に流出するようにしたエアクリーナにおいて、前記ケースキャップの前記フィルターエレメント側に複数の通孔を有するプレートを取付けて前記ケースキャップと前記ケース本体とにより前記フィルターエレメントを挟持させ、一方前記ケース本体または前記ケースキャップの前記フィルターエレメント挟持部下部に切欠を設けるとともに、この切欠に通ずる排水路を前記ケース本体またはケースキャップの下面に沿ってこれと一体的に設けて、前記排水路に前記ケース本体とケースキャップとの外側当接部に介在させたシール部材の両端を臨ませたことを特徴とするものである。

【解決しようとする課題】
自動二輪車のエアクリーナは直接雨水やほこり、油分等にさらされる場合が多く、フィルターエレメントの定期的なメンテナンスが必要であった。またエアクリーナの側方にサイドカバーが設けられる場合でも、サイドカバーとの間隔が広いと、エアクリーナの側方や下方を流れる空気に浮遊する上記ほこりや油分等が、エアクリーナに吸入されやすかった。

前記従来の課題を解決するために、請求項1記載の発明は、座席の前部下方にエアクリーナ、該エアクリーナの側方にサイドカバーをそれぞれ備えた自動二輪車において、
上記サイドカバーとエアクリーナとの間に、該エアクリーナの吸入口の周囲を覆う該エアクリーナとは別部材のカバーが、上記エアクリーナ内の空室に連通するエアクリーナ吸入筒に嵌合され、上記カバーは有底筒状部を有し、該有底筒状部が上記エアクリーナ吸入口に嵌合し、該カバーが上記エアクリーナに取付けられ、上記カバーの有底筒状部の一部が切欠かれ、該切欠きが車体後方を向いて開口する入口を形成していることを特徴とする自動二輪車の吸気構造である。したがって、請求項1記載の発明では、自動二輪車が雨中を走行する際、エアクリーナに吸入される空気中の雨滴やほこり等を減少させることができる。
