Abstract

【課題】 ＥＰＧ表示を使用して広告及び他の情報を表示できることを目的とする。

Description

本発明は、一般に、ＴＶスクリーンに電子番組ガイドとして表示されるテレビジョンスケジュール情報に係り、より詳細には、番組ガイドから去ることなく、番組再フォーマット機能にアクセスするためのシステム及び方法に係る。
大都市エリア又はケーブルネットワークではテレビ放送局の数が増加したために、視聴者に放映される潜在的に関心のある番組の数も飛躍的に増加した。直接衛星信号を受信できるディッシュアンテナを使用すると、視聴者が見ることのできる番組の数は、更に増加している。
更に、テレビジョンは、テレビジョンとＰＣ技術の融合したものであるデジタルの将来に直面している。将来のテレビジョン受像機は、マイクロコンピュータやモデムを含み、ネットワーク、イントラネット及びインターネットを経て他のコンピュータと相互接続すると共に、プリンタのようなコンピュータ周辺装置にも接続できるものとなろう。「擬似ビデオ・オン・デマンド（ＮＶＯＤ）」や、「ビデオ・オン・デマンド」や、「ワールド・ワイド・ウェブへのアクセス」や「オーディオ・オン・デマンド」等の機能は、視聴者に過度の情報及び帯域巾を与えることになろう。
次第に明らかになってきているように、情報の過負荷は、実際上、供給される情報の有用性を低下させる。従って、入手できる情報を管理しそしてユーザに馴染み易いインテリジェントなインターフェイスを提供することが大きな課題となっている。
そこで、視聴者が種々の番組を分類しそしてどの番組を視聴し又は録画するか決定する上で助けとなるように、視聴者のテレビスクリーン上に直接映し出されるテレビジョンスケジュールシステムが開発された。このような１つのテレビジョンスケジュールシステムが、参考としてここに取り上げる共通に譲渡された米国特許第５，３５３，１２１号（ヤング氏等）に開示されている。ヤング氏の１つの実施形態では、テレビジョンスケジュールは、異なるテレビ番組に対応するセルのアレーを有する一連のメニュースクリーンを含む。視聴者は、これらのセルをスクロールして、種々の時間に種々のチャンネルにどのテレビ番組が放映されるか見ることができる。更に、視聴者は、あるセルを選択して関連番組の詳細な情報を得たり、又は追加オプションをもつ他のサブメニューを引き出したりすることができる。
前記ヤング氏の特許のようなテレビジョンスケジュールシステムの近年の開発は、多数の新たな課題を生み出した。１つのこのような課題は、ＥＰＧを利用して、このＥＰＧをアクチベートしたときに視聴者に広告及び他の情報を提供するというものである。
通常、広告は、ＥＰＧの小さな四角形領域に表示される。しかしながら、ブラウジング及びグレージング特徴を含むＥＰＧシステムの場合に、視聴者は、視聴できるチャンネルを何気なく切り換えて行くときには、ＥＰＧをあまりアクチベートしない。従って、ＥＰＧ表示を使用して広告及び他の情報を表示するための新たな技術が積極的に追及されている。
本発明の１つの観点によれば、ブラウジング及びグレージングポップアップに広告／メッセージウインドウが設けられ、視聴者がブラウジング又はグレージングするときにメッセージが与えられる。
本発明の別の観点によれば、ブラウジング又はグレージングポップアップウインドウに表示されるメッセージの内容がＥＰＧ発生システムにより制御される。
本発明の他の特徴及び効果は、添付図面を参照した以下の詳細な説明から明らかとなろう。
広告映像は、ＥＰＧデータベースに記憶することもできるし、又は外部ソースから受け取ることもできる。グレージング／ブラウジングポップアップフォーマットは、メモリに記憶されたグラフィックオブジェクトと、ＲＯＭに記憶されたデータで発生される一定エリアと、データベースに記憶されるか又はリアルタイムで与えられる更新可能なデータに基づいてテキスト及びグラフィックを表示するための可変エリアとを備えている。
ポップアップは、以下に詳細に述べる広告リストデータ構造体に記憶された内容を有する広告又は他のメッセージを表示するための可変エリアを備えている。
好ましい実施形態では、本発明の電子番組ガイドは、パーソナルコンピュータや、ＰＣＴＶや、セットトップボックスに接続されたテレビジョンや、カスタムボードを含むテレビジョンにおいて実施することができる。しかし、本発明は、特定のハードウェア構成に限定されるものではなく、コンピュータ及びテレビジョンシステムの新たな組合せが開発されるにつれて、その利用性が増加するであろう。以下の説明では、前記のどれもが時々「ＴＶシステム」と称される。ＴＶシステムを表すブロック図が図２に示されている。本発明は、特定のＴＶシステムに限定されるものではないので、実施の細部については示さない。
良く知られたように、表示されるべき映像は、例えば、米国で利用されているＮＴＳＣ規格に基づいてアナログ信号として送信されるか、又はアナログ搬送波に変調されたデジタル信号として送信される。信号は、ケーブル、アンテナ又は衛星ディッシュを経て受信される。通常、テレビジョン受像機は、アナログ信号を受信するように設計され、そしてコンピュータディスプレイ装置は、デジタルフォーマットにエンコードされた映像を表示するように設計される。しかしながら、デコーダシステムは、デジタルデータを、テレビジョン受像機に表示するためのアナログ信号に変換し、そしてＴＶモデムは、アナログのＴＶ信号をモニタ上に表示するようにフォーマットすることができる。
図２において、ケーブル３０、アンテナ３２、又は衛星ディッシュ３４を経て受信されるアナログ又はデジタルのＴＶ信号がテレビジョンシステムへ供給される。信号がデジタル放送サービスからの信号である場合には、デコーダ３６がその信号を基本帯域映像及び音声又はチャンネル３／４ＲＦに変換する。信号がアナログ信号である場合には、それが生の映像出力として通される。テレビジョンシステム３８は、その構成に基づき、選択された出力を受信し、そして受信した番組を表示する。
ＰＣＴＶは、生の映像、基本帯域映像又はチャンネル３／４出力に接続されたＴＶカード４０を備え、映像をデジタル化し、そしてコンピュータモニタのサイズ変更可能なウインドウに映像を表示する。又、ＰＣＴＶは、モデム４２によって地上電話線にも接続される。
受信信号がアナログＴＶ信号である場合には、ＰＣＴＶのＴＶカードがアナログ信号をデジタル化し、そしてそこに含まれた情報を垂直帰線消去インターバルから抽出する。一方、信号がデジタル信号である場合には、個別の音声、映像、ＶＢＩ（クローズド・キャプション、テレテキスト、及び番組関連情報のような垂直帰線消去情報）、番組ガイド及び条件アクセス情報が個別のビット流として供給される。番組のための映像及び音声ビット流は、表示のためのフォーマットに変換され、そして番組ガイド情報は、番組ガイドデータベースを形成するように処理される。メモリに記憶されたソフトウェアを実行するプロセッサは、対話型電子番組ガイドの映像と、受信した番組の映像を発生する。番組ガイドは、ウインドウに表示される番組と対話しそしてそれを制御するように使用できる。
スターサイト・テレキャスト社によって提供されるガイドのような電子番組ガイドを表示するように構成されたテレビジョンシステムは、オンスクリーン表示コントローラと、以下に述べる他のハードウェアとを備えている。標準的なアナログ放送信号が受信される場合には、番組ガイドデータがＶＢＩからＶＢＩデータスライサーによって抽出され、そして番組データベースを形成するように処理される。ＤＢＳデジタル信号が衛星又はケーブルから受信される場合には、ＶＢＩ及び番組データが個別のビット流で供給される。番組ガイド映像は、ローカル又はリモート位置で発生され、そしてオンスクリーン表示コントローラへ供給される。リモートコントロールを経て対話機能が与えられる。
或いは又、番組ガイドは、コンピュータモニタに表示することもでき、このモニタは、例えば、テレビジョン及び／又はＶＣＲを制御するためのＩＲコードを発生するためにＩＲブラスター４４を含むＩＲインターフェイスを介してテレビ受像機を対話式に制御する。
電子ガイドデータベースがローカルで発生される場合には、電子番組ガイドを形成するシステムは、テレビジョンスケジュール情報を受信し、そしてその受信した情報を処理してデータベースを形成しなければならない。従って、システムは、データ受信ユニット、プロセッサ、番組コード及びデータベースを記憶するためのメモリ、オンスクリーン表示ジェネレータ（ＯＳＤ）、及び選択されたチャンネルに同調するための制御インターフェイスを必要とする。
１つの好ましい実施形態では、スケジュール情報は、特定フォーマットの１組の短いコマンドとして送信される。所与のチャンネルのショースケジュール、スケジュールにおける各ショーの題名、そしてチャンネルの各ショーに関する記述及び情報属性といった情報が異なるコマンドにより通信される。従って、特定の時間に放送されるべきショーに対する情報は、多数のコマンドにおいて送信される。コマンドにおけるＩＤ番号は、メモリに記憶されてプロセッサにより実行されるデータベースエンジン（ＤＢＥ）ソフトウェアを用いて情報を関連データベースへと容易に編成する。
好ましい実施形態では、視聴者のテレビジョン受像機にボードが含まれ、データベースは、ローカル位置に記憶され、そしてコマンドは、例えばＰＢＳのような指定チャンネルの番組のＶＢＩにおいて送信される。番組ガイド情報を受信し、番組ガイドデータベースを発生し、番組ガイドを表示し、そして番組ガイドを対話式に制御するためのボードの一例が図３に示されている。コマンドは、指定チャンネルで放送される番組の垂直帰線消去インターバルにおいてボードへ送信される。
或いは又、コマンドは、地上電話線を経てローカルユニットに送信することもできる。更に、以下に述べるように、あるシステムでは、データベースがリモート位置に形成され、そしてガイド自身がローカルユニットに送信される。
データベースエンジンは、ＲＡＭにハイアラーキーデータベースを構築する。データベースのハイアラーキー構造が図４に示されている。データベースは、ハンドル及びハンドルテーブルによりリンクされたスケジュールデータ構造体及びテーマデータ構造体として内部で構成される。各ハンドルは、ハンドルテーブルに対するインデックスであり、ハンドルテーブルは、データベースのアイテムが記憶されたメモリのブロックを指すポインタを含む。
例えば、ＤＳＳシステムのような別の実施形態では、番組ガイドデータは、データベースエンジンにより処理されるビット流として送信される。
更に、Ｎ．Ｅ．Ｗ．Ｓ（ニュース、娯楽、天気及びスポーツ）データベースも開発されている。ストーリテキスト及びストーリＩＤを含むコマンドが送信される。番組ガイドから、番組に関連したストーリへのリンクを形成することができ、そしてガイドから関連ストーリをアクセスすることができる。
広告テキストを含むコマンド、及びＥＰＧに表示されるショーに広告をリンクするためのＩＤを含むロゴから、広告データベースも形成される。ユーザは、ガイドから広告情報を直接アクセスすることができる。
又、ＥＰＧに表示される番組に関連したインターネットサイトへのＵＲＬを含むコマンドからインターネットデータベースが形成される。視聴者が、例えば、ＷｅｂＴＶ、ＰＣ又はＰＣＴＶのようなウェブイネーブルされるプラットホームにおいてＥＰＧを視聴している場合には、リンクされるサイトをＥＰＧから直接アクセスすることができる。
更に、グラフィック番組モジュールは、スケジュール、ショーの題名、及びデータベースからの他の情報を用いて種々の表示を形成する。ＯＳＤコントローラがキャラクタモードで動作する場合には、表示がキャラクタコードのグリッドであり、これはＯＳＤコントロータへ転送され、そしてＯＳＤコントローラがオンスクリーン表示を発生する。
入力応答ユーザインターフェイス番組モジュールは、ユーザ入力に応答して、特定入力に応じた新たな表示を発生する。１つの好ましい実施形態では、ユーザは、例えば、リモートコントローラ、マウス又はキーボードのような入力装置を使用して、現在表示の一部分上にポインタを配置し、そしてクリックする。入力応答モジュールは、ポインタの位置及び現在表示されている特定の表示に応答して、応答表示を発生するか又は特定の処置をとる。別の好ましい実施形態では、ユーザインターフェイスがリモートコントローラのファンクションボタンに応答する。特定例について以下に説明する。

図３は、電子式オンスクリーンスケジュール表示及び他の機能を実行するのに使用される電子ハードウェアユニット５２の実施形態を示すブロック図である。この特定のハードウェアユニット５２は、テレビ視聴のための家庭用衛星ディッシュを有するＴＶＲＯ（ＴＶ受信のみ）顧客用として示されている。このユニットは、既存の顧客ＴＶＲＯシステムと直列に接続される。

オンスクリーン表示コントローラ・フォーマッター（ＯＳＤＣＦ）１２４は、Ｉ／Ｏコントローラ、オンスクリーン表示コントローラ（ＯＳＤ）及びクローズドキャプションデータ（ＣＣＤ）ＶＢＩデータスライサーとして機能する。ＶＢＩ（垂直帰線消去インターバル）は、テレビジョン信号が走査電子ビームをスクリーンの底部から頂部へ再配置できるようにするＴＶ信号のデッドスペースである。デジタルデータ、例えば、クローズキャプションドデータは、ＶＢＩの間に搬送波信号に変調される。

ＤＢＥは、ＲＡＭにハイアラーキーデータベースを形成する。データベースのハイアラーキー構造が図４に示されている。データベースは、ハンドル及びハンドルテーブルによってリンクされたスケジュールデータ構造体及びテーマデータ構造体として内部で形成される。各ハンドルは、ハンドルテーブルに対するインデックスであり、そしてハンドルテーブルは、データベースの構造体が記憶されるメモリのブロックを指すポインタを含む。
スケジュールデータ構造に対するハイアラーキーは、下降順に示すと、次の通りである。
チャンネルデータテーブル： 加入者ユニットのチャンネルリストを含む。
ショーリスト： チャンネルに対して放送スケジュールが組まれた各ショーのタイムスロットを含む。
ショーリスト： 題名テキスト及びショー題名属性を含む。
ショー記述： ショーの評価、属性及び記述テキストを含む。
図５に示すチャンネルデータテーブルは、ハイアラーキーにおける最上位データ構造である。このテーブルは、加入者ユニットにより受信される各チャンネルのエントリーを含む。チャンネルデータテーブルのエントリーは、あまり頻繁に変更されず、加入者ユニットの位置及び受信するサービスの形式により決定される。チャンネルデータテーブルの各エントリーは、チャンネルに関する情報と、チャンネルに対するショーリストハンドルテーブルへのハンドルとを含む。
ハイアラーキーにおける次のデータ構造は、図６に示すショーリストである。このショーリストは、通常真夜中ＧＭＴであるスタート時間と、２４時間のスケジュールとを含む。チャンネルのスケジュールは、各ショーのショースロットが特定日に特定チャンネルによって放送されるようなショースロットの順序付けされたシーケンスによって与えられる。各スロットは、時間巾と、ショー題名ハンドルと、ショー記述ハンドルとを含む。所与のスタート時間に対応するエントリーを見つけるには、ショーリストの始めから、時間巾値を加えながら、エントリーを順に走査していくことを必要とする。
データベースは、完全に構成されると、各チャンネルごとの価値ある週間ショーリストを保持する。週の曜日は、ショーリストハンドルを２バイトづつ増加することによりアクセスされる。ショーリストは、毎日真夜中ＧＭＴに更新され、終了した日のショーリストは削除され、そして次週の同じ曜日のショーリストがデータベースに追加される。
スケジュールハイアラーキーにおける次のデータ構造は、図７に示されたショー題名エントリー、及び図８に示されたショー記述エントリーである。所与のショースロットに対し、ショー題名エントリー及びショー記述エントリーは、スロットに含まれたハンドルを使用してアクセスされる。ショー題名及びショー記述エントリーは、ブロックに分割されたメモリプールに記憶される。各ショー題名は、独特の２０ビットの識別番号（ＳＩＤ）によって識別され、そして各ショー記述は、ヘッド端に指定された独特の２０ビット番号によって識別される。ショー題名ハンドルは、ＳＩＤに基づくものであり、そしてショー題名ハンドルは、ショー題名ハンドルテーブルに対してオフセットしている。特定のショー題名ハンドルによってアクセスされるショー題名テーブルのエントリーは、ショー題名エントリーが記憶されるメモリプールにおける第１ブロックのアドレスを含む。同様に、ショー記述ハンドルによってアクセスされるショー記述ハンドルテーブルのエントリーは、ショー記述エントリーが記憶されるメモリプールにおける第１ブロックのアドレスを記憶する。
各ショー題名エントリーは、テーマインデックスＩＤと、ショー題名のテキストとを含む。通常、１つのショー題名エントリーは、異なるチャンネル、日付及び時刻に対して多数のショーリストによって参照される。従って、ショーリストのハンドルを使用することにより、全てのショーリストがメモリにおける１つのショー題名エントリーを参照し、メモリが効率的に使用される。多数のショー題名エントリーは長い寿命を有する。というのは、ショーの題名は、長期間にわたって放送されるシリーズの場合があり、多数のショーが多数のチャンネルによって放送されるので多数のショーリストによって参照されるからである。
各ショー記述エントリーは、テーマインデックスＩＤと、批評家の評価と、ショーに対するＭＰＡＡ評価と、特色マスクビットと、製作年と、ショー記述テキストとを含む。ショー記述エントリーは、シリーズ内の特定の作品に対してのみ有効であるから、ショー題名エントリーより寿命が短い。
スケジュールのサーチ
特定の時刻に対するスケジュール情報を得そしてそのスケジュール情報を番組グリッドに表示するには、次のステップを必要とする。チャンネルリストの各チャンネルごとに、その日のショーリストがアクセスされそして走査される。チャンネルに対する水平ブロックは、選択された時刻以降のショースロットの時間巾に基づいてサイズが決められる。各ショースロットにより参照されるショー題名エントリーがアクセスされ、そしてショースロットに対応する水平ブロックにショーの題名が表示される。
好きなチャンネルのリスト
図５に戻ると、チャンネルデータテーブルの各エントリーは、「好きなリンク」フィールドを含む。このフィールドは、次に好きなチャンネルへのリンクを含み、ユーザにより決定された順序で順序付けされてリンクされたチャンネルリストを形成するように使用される。
ユーザインターフェイス及びデータベースエンジンは、ガイドに表示されるべきチャンネルの順序付け及び選択を容易にする容易にするためのスクリーンを与える。順序付けされたチャンネルリストの第１チャンネルへのリンクがメモリに記憶される。このリンクは、最も好きなチャンネルに対してチャンネルテーブルエントリーをアクセスするのに使用される。そのチャンネルの「好きなリンク」がアクセスされ、そしてそれを用いて次に好きなチャンネルに対するチャンネルテーブルエントリーをアクセスし、等々を行って、指定の限界値、例えば、０ｘ００が好きなチャンネルリストの終りを示すまで繰り返す。
好きなリストを２つ以上もつ能力は、多数の「好きなリンク」フィールドを各チャンネルテーブルエントリーに記憶することによりサポートできる。
テーマデータ構造
データベースの強力な特徴は、ショーをテーマごとにグループ分けできることである。ショー題名及びショー記述エントリーに記憶されたテーマＩＤは、特定のショーを特定のテーマに一致させるのに使用される。例えば、視聴者は、全コメディ映画のリストを見たいことがある。
各一次分類、前記例では映画は、図９に示すようにテーマ分類テーブルに含まれたテーマ分類エントリーを有する。テーマ分類エントリーは、テーマ分類ＩＤと、サブ分類ハンドルテーブルに対するハンドルと、テーマ分類名とを含む。テーマ分類ＩＤは、この一次分類については、テーマサブ分類、前記例ではコメディを識別するのに使用される。
各一次分類ごとに、図１０に示すテーマサブ分類テーブルがある。このテーブルは、一次テーマ分類に含まれた各テーマサブ分類ごとにエントリーを含む。各テーブルエントリーは、サブ分類エントリーに対応するテーマＩＤと、サブ分類の名称とを含む。
テーマサーチ
視聴者が、例えば、コメディ映画のような特定形式のショーをサーチし始めると、各チャンネルが検査され、そしてリストされた各ショーのテーマＩＤが、映画の一次分類エントリーに対応するテーマサブ分類テーブルのコメディエントリーに記憶されたテーマＩＤと比較される。テーマＩＤに一致するショーに関する情報がテーマサーチデータ構造においてユーザインターフェイスのローカルバッファに記憶される。
テーマサーチ機能は、データベースへの２つのコールを必要とする。その第１のコールは、テーマサーチデータ構造体を、そのサーチ時刻からオフセットしたショー時刻を含んで特定のチャンネルエントリーに対するテーマ分類に一致する第１のショーに初期化する。次いで、第２のコールは、特定のオフセット時間後の次の一致するショーを見出し、テーマサーチデータ構造体を更新し、そして次のショーまでのオフセットを返送する。
テーマユーザインターフェイスアクセスに対する基本的なアルゴリズムは、次の通りである。
１．所与のスタート時刻に対して、各チャンネルエントリーごとに、その時刻又はその時間中にテーマ基準に一致する第１のショーを見出し、そしてリストを形成する。一致するチャンネルを追跡する。
２．ショーのリストを時刻順に分類する。
３．分類されたリストにおいて最も早期のショーをもつチャンネルを見出す。
４．この最も早期のショーをユーザインターフェイスサーチリストに入れる。
５．最も早期のショーをもつチャンネルに対して、テーマ基準及び更新されたオフセット時間に一致する次のショーを要求する。
６．全てのショーが探索されるか、又は他の特定の限界に達するまでステップ２−４を繰り返す（即ち、サーチは、限定された数の一致に対して行なう）。
次いで、選択された分類に対するショーを時刻順に表示する。
広告及びＮ．Ｅ．Ｗ．Ｓデータ構造
広告リストのデータ構造はショーリストと同様である。これは、スタート時刻及び２４時間の広告スケジュールを含む。広告リストは領域化され、そして所定の日に放送されるべき各広告ごとに広告スロットを含む。広告スロットは、時間巾と、広告エントリーをアクセスするのに使用される広告ＩＤとを含む。
各広告エントリーは、広告旗テキストフィールドと、広告テキストフィールドと、もし適当であれば、広告ロゴを指すポインタとを含む。広告ロゴは、広告と共に表示されるべきグラフィックファイルを含む。
広告エントリーは、広告旗テキスト及び広告テキストを含む。
同様に、Ｎ．Ｅ．Ｗ．Ｓ（ニュース、娯楽、天気及びスポーツ）データベースを記憶することができる。その構造は、前記データベースと同様であるが、種々の事柄を表すようにテキストエントリーが更新される。
データベースの構築
データベースは、プロセッサにおいて動作するデータベースエンジンソフトウェアモジュールにより構築される。個別のコマンドを含むメッセージは、データベースエンジンによって受け取られる。コマンドは、例えば、チャンネルデータテーブルに含まれるべき特定の加入者ユニットに利用可能なチャンネルを指定する領域コマンドと、チャンネルデータテーブルのエントリーを形成するのに使用される情報を含むチャンネルデータコマンドと、メモリ内のエリアを参照するＳＩＤ及びＤＩＤを含むショーリスト、ショー題名及びショー記述コマンドとを含む。データベースエンジンは、チャンネルテーブルに含まれたチャンネルに関連したショーリストコマンドのみを更なる処理のために選択する。
データベースエンジンは、ショーリストに含まれた全てのＳＩＤ及びＤＩＤに対するメモリ内の記憶位置を形成する。一致するＳＩＤ又はＤＩＤを有するコマンドに含まれた情報は、参照されたメモリ位置に書き込まれる。実際に、ＳＩＤ及びＤＩＤは、より効率的なサーチのためにハッシュシステムによって処理される。
メッセージは、種々のやり方で加入者ユニットへ転送される。放送番組のＶＢＩにおいてメッセージを受信するシステムは、前記で説明した。ＤＢＳシステムでは、メッセージが専用のビット流において送信される。
ＤＢＳシステムでは、映像基本帯域信号がデジタル化され、圧縮され、そしてアナログ搬送波信号に変調される。圧縮技術の進歩により、１つの番組を送信するのに従来使用されていた搬送波は、現在では、４つの番組を送信することができる。典型的に、映像信号に加えて、音声や、ＶＢＩ（クローズドキャプション及びテレテキストのような垂直帰線消去データ）や、番組ガイド情報や、条件付アクセス情報のような情報をエンコードする他のビット流が、個別のビット流として供給され、複合ビット流にマルチプレクスされ、そして搬送波信号に変調される。
或いは又、基本帯域自体がデジタルデータ流において送信されてもよい。例えば、ＤＳＳでは、番組ガイド情報が、３６チャンネルに対し、３時間の番組のブロックで送信される。番組は、異なる帯域にデジタルで変調される。図６に示すように、衛星は、異なる帯域で同時に送信する多数のトランスポンダ５００を有する。多数のチャンネルは、デジタル圧縮技術を用いて単一の帯域に変調することができる。現在の番組を含むビット流は、全ての帯域により搬送される。しかしながら、異なるチャンネルブロックに対する将来の番組は、異なる帯域で搬送される。ブロックは、カルーセル即ちエンドレスループとして送信され、従って、特定時間帯域が受信される前に遅延が生じる。
視聴者の位置にあるデコーダは、１６個の搬送波を受信し、そして１つの搬送波を選択するように同長期／復調器を制御する。搬送波は、サンプリングされ、デコードされ、エラー修正され、そしてデマルチプレクスされて、種々のビット流を分離する。デコーダは、圧縮された映像を圧縮解除して、実質上いかなるサイズの映像も再構成する映像デコーダチップを備えている。
視聴者がガイドをアクセスすると、その時間周期に対するブロックがメモリにロードされ、ユーザはガイドと対話することができる。その後の時間及び異なるチャンネルに対して、時間遅延が生じ得る。例えば、現在番組ブロックがＢ１でありそして現在受信されているブロックがＢ４である場合には、ユーザは、その現在番組を受信して表示できるまでに、ブロックＢ５、Ｂ６及びＢ７が送信されるのを待機しなければならない。視聴者は、各ブロックを送信するための時間巾の和、即ちｄ５＋ｄ６＋ｄ７に等しい時間遅延を待機することになる。番組ガイドブロックが異なる帯域に変調される場合には、ケーブルボックスは、その帯域に同調し、そして所望のブロックがカルーセルにおいて送信されるまで待機しなければならず、従って、将来の番組のためにガイドがアクセスされる場合には、遅延が生じ得る。
ケーブルの場合、データベースは、ＳＳＴヘッド端に構築され、そして地上ラインを経てケーブルのヘッド端に送信される。ケーブル会社は、例えば、ＶＢＩや衛星やデジタル等の希望のやり方でデータを送信する。
ユーザインターフェイス
ユーザインターフェイスは、入力装置、好ましくはリモートコントローラからリモートコントロールコマンドをその一次入力として取り上げる。１つの実施形態では、ユーザは、リモートコントローラのファンクションキーを押すことにより種々の機能を要求する。別の実施形態では、異なる機能に対応する表示スクリーン上の異なる対話領域と共にＧＵＩが使用される。ユーザは、異なる機能に対応する対話領域上にカーソルを移動し、そしてコマンドを発生するための機能を選択する。コマンドを入力する特定の形態は重要でなく、音声コマンドを利用する技術もやがて利用できるであろう。
ユーザインターフェイスは、コマンドを受け取り、そしてコマンドで要求された機能を実行することにより、要求された表示スクリーンで応答する。実行される機能は、番組を録画したり、チャンネルに同調したり、関連インターネットサイトにアクセスしたり、ペイ・パー・ビュー(pay-per-view)番組を購入したり、又は商品を購入したりといった動作を行うものである。各スクリーンのデータ及びフォーマットは、手前のスクリーン、１日の時刻、データベースの内容、受け取ったコマンド、及び他のパラメータに依存する。状態テーブルを使用してスクリーンの流れが定められる。
各定められたスクリーンごとに、導入機能、退出機能、更新機能、及び要求取り扱い機能の配列がある。導入機能は、全ての必要なデータを収集してスクリーンをフォーマットするために状態が最初に入力されるときにコールされる。退出機能は、メモリ及びデータをスクリーンに対して解除するためにコールされる。更新機能は、スクリーンに表示された情報を更新する必要がある場合に、スクリーンの時刻を更新しそしてスクリーンを描き直すために、１分間に一度コールされる。
特定の状態に入ると、テーブルは、リモートコントローラの各キー又はスクリーン上の各対話領域に対応する別のソフトウェアファンクションへの参照を含む。これらの参照されたファンクションは、それに関連したリモートコントロールボタンが押されるか又は対話領域が選択されたときに実行される。
例えば、ユーザが番組を録画したい場合には、ＧＵＩ実施形態では、視聴者が録画の対話領域上にカーソルを移動し、これを選択して、録画機能の実行を要求する。次いで、確認スクリーンが発生される。ユーザが録画要求を確認すると、録画待ち行列にエントリーがなされる。次いで、録画デーモンがリアルタイムエグゼクティブからコールされ、待ち行列が検査され、そして録画機能が管理される。
スクリーンは、データベースエンジンにより発生されたグラフィック表示コマンドに基づきオンスクリーン表示（ＯＳＤ）コントローラによって表示される。システム表示スクリーンを描くのに必要な原始コマンドには、「スクリーン消去コマンド」、「四角形描写コマンド」、「四角形セーブコマンド」、「四角形復帰コマンド」、「四角形移動コマンド」、「ＡＳＣＩＩストリング書き込みコマンド」、及び「チャンネルアイコン描写コマンド」がある。
各スクリーンは、不揮発性メモリに記憶されたコード及びデータに基づく一定のエリアと、データベースに記憶されたデータを使用するショー題名及び記述のような可変のエリアとを含む。データベースエンジンの説明で上述したように、データベースは、一般にＡＳＣＩＩテキストストリングの形態でデータベースに記憶された情報の効率的なサーチを容易にするように構成される。更に、グラフィックファイルも、表示スクリーンのウインドウに表示されるべくデータベースに記憶される。
ポップアップメッセージシステムの詳細な説明
チャンネルスペースブラウズモードにおいては、視聴者がリモートコントローラを使用してチャンネルを切り換えていくときに、現在のテレビ番組と四角形のポップアップがスクリーン上に同時に表示される。ポップアップは、リモートコントローラによって現在選択された番組又はチャンネルに関する情報メッセージを含む。タイムスペースブラウズモードにおいては、ポップアップは、現在視聴しているチャンネルに代わってその後の番組に関する情報メッセージを含む。グレーズモードにおいては、ポップアップは、現在選択された番組又はチャンネルに関する情報メッセージを含む。例えば、米国特許第５，３５３，１２１号のカラム１０の６６行目には、グレージングオーバーレイが開示されている。ポップアップは、チャンネル切り換えコマンドによって呼び出されるのが好ましく、即ちテレビ視聴者がリモートコントローラに新たなチャンネルを入力したときに、ポップアップが直ちにスクリーンに現われ、そして所定の一定時間、例えば、１０秒間保持される。或いは又、ポップアップは、リモートコントローラの専用キーによって呼び出すこともでき、即ちキーを押したときに、ポップアップが現われ、そしてキーを再び押すと、ポップアップが消える。番組又はチャンネルに関する情報に加えて、現在テレビ番組と同時に広告メッセージも表示される。広告メッセージは、テレビ番組スポンサーの商品又はサービスをプロモートすることができ、ひいては、コマーシャルの放映中に表示される広告メッセージを強化することができる。或いは又、広告メッセージは、他のスポンサーの商品又はサービスをプロモートすることもできる。それとは別に、広告メッセージは、近日中のテレビ番組又は行事をプロモートすることもできる。更に、又、広告メッセージは、表示されている現在テレビ番組の主旨に依存するという点で文脈上敏感なものであり、例えば、広告メッセージは、その種のテレビ番組を通常見ている誰もの関心に訴えるように選択され、例えば、ゴルフリゾートに関する広告メッセージは、ゴルフマッチのテレビ番組と共に表示され、又は航空会社の広告メッセージは、テレビ観光旅行と共に表示される。要約すれば、広告メッセージは、テレビ番組に関する情報メッセージと共にポップアップに送られる。
別の実施形態では、ポップアップは、情報メッセージを伴わずに表示されるテレビ番組に文脈上関連した広告メッセージでもよい。
図１は、上述したものを示す。テレビジョン１０は、テレビ放送番組をスクリーン１２に表示する。好ましい実施形態では、四角形のポップアップエリア１４は、広告リストデータ構造体に記憶されたデータに基づく広告メッセージを同時に表示する第１の可変エリア１６を備えている。このエリア１６は、データプロバイダーにより選択された計画に基づいて異なる広告が表示されるという意味で可変である。例えば、テレビが同調される各チャンネルごとに異なる広告を表示することができる。又は、ブラウズ又はグレージングモードが開始されるたびに回転式に異なる広告を与えることもできる。或いは、規定の広告サイクルに基づき所定時間の後に異なる広告を表示することもできる。或いは、表示されているテレビ番組の状況に基づいて異なる広告を表示することもできる。又、ポップアップエリア１４は、表示されているショーの内容に関連した情報、例えば、題名、残り時間、チャンネル等を表示する第２の可変エリア１８も含む。このエリア１８は、ショーが変わるときに、情報も変わるという意味で可変である。もし所望であれば、ポップアップエリア１４は、視聴されている又は視聴者に関心のあるテレビ番組に関連した情報を表示する他の固定エリア又は可変エリアを含むこともできる。或いは、エリア１２をもたずに、エリア１６及び１８を表示することもできるし、エリア１８を除去することもできる。一般的には、図１に示すように、ポップアップをスクリーンの中央付近に目立つように表示するのが好ましいが、ポップアップは、その位置から外れて、例えば、下縁に沿って表示することもできる。又、ポップアップの形状は、例えば、吹き出しや長円形や円形のような異なるものでもよい。更に、ポップアップのサイズ、即ちポップアップの背景によって占有されるスペースは、表示されるべきメッセージのサイズに基づいて変化し得る。
広告リストデータ構造体へのハンドルをチャンネルテーブルに含ませるか、又は特定のショーに基づきショーテーブルエントリーにハンドルを含ませることにより、異なるチャンネルに異なる広告を指定することができる。
広告の内容は、リストデータ構造体におけるテキスト又はグラフィックエントリーを更新するコマンドを送信することにより変更される。
複合ＥＰＧ及び広告システムの詳細な説明
受信したテレビ番組又は映像カットのような映像とＥＰＧとを交互に異なるモードで表示することも知られている。このような場合に、ＥＰＧは、１つ以上の一様のカラーの背景に表示される。本発明のこの特徴は、このような映像に含まれる広告メッセージとの複合体においてＥＰＧを表示する別のやり方を含む。
公知技術で知られたように、重畳する前景グラフィック映像の部分を透明にして、その下の背景映像を透かして見えるようにすることもできる。例えば、ＧＩＦフォーマットの映像の場合に、透明値を背景カラーにセットして、選択されたパレット番号を有する前景映像のピクセルを背景映像のピクセルと置き換えるようにすることもできる。
ＥＰＧのフォーマットが図１１Ａに示されており、そして広告メッセージのフォーマットが図１１Ｂに示されている。ＥＰＧのフォーマットは、四角形の輪郭と、四角形に表示されたキャラクタとを含む。四角形は、一般に、グラフィックシステムに使用されたパレットに対するパレット番号に対応するカラーで埋められる。パレット番号は、ＥＰＧデータ及びフィームウェアと共にＲＡＭ又はＲＯＭに記憶される。
従って、広告メッセージとの複合体において図１１Ａに示すＥＰＧを表示するためには、種々の四角形を埋めるのに使用されるカラーに対するパレット番号が透明性に対して選択される。従って、背景映像が図１１Ｂに示す広告メッセージであり、そして前景映像が図１１ＡのＥＰＧである場合には、透明なＥＰＧに対する複合映像が図１１Ｃに示すようになる。ユーザは、リモートコントローラにより発生されるコマンドにより、一様のカラー（１つ又は複数）の背景に従来の形態でＥＰＧのみを表示するか、又は図１１Ｃに示すように広告メッセージとの複合体においてＥＰＧを表示するかを選択できる。ユーザによって複合体が選択されたときには、ＥＰＧデータが映像プロセッサに供給される前に、マイクロプロセッサが透明値を記憶された背景カラー値に置き換える。映像プロセッサの出力と広告メッセージとが混合された後に、その合成信号がディスプレイの駆動回路に供給される。
図１１Ｃに示すように、背景像のレイアウトは、ＥＰＧ像のレイアウトを考慮に入れねばならない。船の暗い船体に重畳する文字は、白黒では見ることができない。見易くするためには、船を書き直さねばならないか、又は異なるカラーのテキストを使用することもできる。
或いは又、前景像を第２の透明な広告にすることもできる。前景の背景部分が透明にされ、そして背景像が、前景像の背景内に広告メッセージが配置されるようにレイアウトされる場合には、２つの広告を同時に表示することができる。

  1. 現に放送されているテレビジョン信号を回復するための受像機と、
    回復したテレビジョン信号を表示するためのディスプレイモニタと、

  2. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョン信号からのテレビジョン画像の内容に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  3. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョン信号のチャンネルのその後の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  4. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョンシステムのチャンネルの現在の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  5. ＥＰＧ及び広告メッセージの複合体を表示する手段を更に備えた請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  6. ＥＰＧのみを表示する手段を更に備えた請求項５に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  7. 少なくとも１つの記憶された背景カラー値を含むＥＰＧデータを記憶する手段を更に備えた請求項５に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  8. 前記記憶された背景カラー値を使用して前記ＥＰＧのみを表示する手段を更に備えた請求項７に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  9. 前記記憶された背景カラー値に透明値を置き換えて複合体を表示する手段を更に備えた請求項７に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  10. テレビジョン画像に広告を表示するための方法であって、
    現に放送されているテレビジョン信号を回復するステップと、
    前記回復したテレビジョン信号からのテレビジョン画像をディスプレイに表示するステップと、
    前記テレビジョン画像の最上面にオーバーレイを表示するステップとを含み、
    前記オーバーレイは、前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に関係のない広告メッセージ及び前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に関係のある情報メッセージを含み、前記テレビジョン画像は前記情報メッセージ及び前記広告メッセージの両方と同時に表示されることを特徴とする方法。
  11. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョン信号からのテレビジョン画像の内容に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１０に記載の方法。
  12. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョン信号のチャンネルのその後の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１０に記載の方法。
  13. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復されるテレビジョンシステムのチャンネルの現在の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１０に記載の方法。
  14. ＥＰＧ及び広告メッセージの複合体を表示するステップを更に含む請求項１０に記載の方法。
  15. ＥＰＧのみを表示するステップを更に含む請求項１４に記載の方法。
  16. 少なくとも１つの記憶された背景カラー値を含むＥＰＧデータを記憶するステップを更に含む請求項１４に記載の方法。
  17. 前記記憶された背景カラー値を使用して前記ＥＰＧのみを表示するステップを更に含む請求項１６に記載の方法。
