Abstract

New photographic light-sensitive silver bromo-iodide emulsions are characterised in that at least 10%, pref. at least 30%, of the total projected are of Ag halide grains comprises Ag bromo-iodide grains with at least one substantially concave major crystal face of dia. at least 0.6 microns and concavity such that at its deepest point the half-thickness of the crystal is less than 80% of the half thickness at the border. Also claimed are photographic assemblies, including colour assemblies which contain at least one such emulsion and a process for preparing the emulsions. Ag halide grains are prepd. in 3 stages: (a) double-jet pptn. at constant pBr 0.6-1.2 in presence of soluble chloride to form thick Ag halide nuclei; (b) double-jet pptn. using a Ag salt soln. at constant concentration and accelerating flow rate and a bromide + iodide soln. at increasing concentration and constant flow rate while pBr decreases about 1.2 to about 0.6. and (c) single jet addn. of Ag salt soln. until pBr rises above 1.2.
