Abstract

This shaft seal device (1) is a shaft seal device (1) in which an annular space is divided in the axial direction of a rotor into a low pressure side area and a high pressure side area by a seal device body (4) which is furnished within an annular space between a rotor (2) and a stator encircling the rotor (2) to the outside peripheral side and which is supported by the stator. The seal device body is provided with: a seal ring (11) supported by the stator so as to surround the rotor the seal ring being formed with a split structure comprising a moveable seal ring (12) the circumferential ends of which are mutually adjacent and stationary seal ring (13) the moveable seal ring (12) being urged diametrically outward by an elastic body (28); and a seal body (9) of a plurality of thin seal pieces (10) extending inward in the diametrical direction of the rotor from the seal ring and stacked in the circumferential direction of the rotor. The device has a communicating part (34) for communication of the low pressure side area and the high pressure side area.
