Abstract

A secondary processing apparatus adapted to separate plastic film from paper in the processing of urban solid refuse which has been previously treated by a first separation process adapted to produce a loosed material consisting chiefly, if not exclusively, of both paper and plastic film is disclosed. The plastic film-paper mixture is separated according to the invention by subjecting same to a hammering and stretching action adapted to take advantage of the different elongation characteristics between paper and plastic films, thereby reducing the paper but leaving the plastic substantially unchanged. The processed paper-plastic mixture is then separated by an enclosed wind cyclone or other granulometric method. [CA1084885A]
