Abstract

1445573 Implantable joint prosthesis NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 27 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55350/72 Heading A5R An endoprosthetic elbow joint comprises a cap 1 having a U-shaped channel cross-section relative to a longitudinal axis (3) therethrough, with an outer bearing surface (2) of circular arcuate cross-section centred on said axis, and an inner fixation surface (4) partially surrounding said axis for bonding with acrylic resin to a humerus 22; and a socket 6 having an inner bearing surface (7) complementary to at least a longitudinal portion of surface (2) to receive the same in mutually articulatory engagement, and an outer fixation surface (9) for similar bonding to an ulna 24. The ends of socket 6 are rounded and the outer surface frusto-pyrimidal. In a modification, a part-cylindrical outer surface (32) is provided adjacent to the cylindrical outer surface (2) to articulate with a complementarily shaped surface (43) of a socket (41) with a stem (44) provided for fixing to a radius. Cap 1 is preferably of thin walled chrome cobalt alloy or stainless steel and the sockets of thicker walled high density polyethylene. The bonding surfaces may be relieved or porous and the socket 6 have a stub for fixing to the ulna. [GB1445573A]
