Abstract

1407034 Chlorine; ferric oxide LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 34363/72 Heading C1A A process for the recovery of chlorine from ferrous chloride comprises contacting ferrous chloride vapour with a quantity of oxygen in excess of that required stoichiometrically for the conversion of the ferrous chloride to ferric oxide and passing the resulting mixture through an essentially empty reactor (i.e. containing no solid packing) at a temperature controlled at a sufficiently high level to prevent condensation of the ferrous chloride during at least the first two seconds of residence of the mixture in the reactor and at a velocity sufficient to entrain the particles of ferric oxide produced and separating the chlorine produced from the particles of ferric oxide. The essentially empty reactor is one containing no solid packing. The ferrous chloride vapour may contain inert gases (such as carbon oxides) and a minor quantity of ferric chloride. Preferably the reaction temperature is at least 30‹ and not more than 200‹ C. above the dew-point and is not allowed to rise above 1300‹ C. Up to 2À5 moles and preferably 0À8 to 2À0 moles of oxygen per mole of ferrous chloride is present. The ferrous chloride vapour may be effluent from a titaniferous ore chlorination and the chlorine product may be used in the chlorination of further ore. In the examples gases from fluidized bed chlorinator 10 in furnace 11 emerge through pipe 12 and contact oxygen fed in at 13. Ferric oxide of particle size 5 microns is entrained and is collected in cyclone 17. [GB1407034A]
